The background image is a view of the C60 "buckyball". This allotropic form of carbon was discovered in the early 1980's. Additional carbon-cage structures have been discovered since then. Collectively, these structures are called fullerenes. The other two allotropic forms of carbon, diamond and graphite, have been known much longer. A number of fullerene structures  are available here.
