Courses taught


In my very long career of about 50 years (including adjunct years), I had the opportunity to teach courses in the entire field of literature, from ancient times to the present. My approach to literature has always been multicultural. My specializations were American Literature, Bible as Literature, World Literature, Contemporary Literature, Women's Studies, Literary Theory, and Composition.
            Undergraduate courses include:
(1) American Literature I and II;
(2) English Literature I and II;
(3) World Litera­ture I and II (including units of Nonwestern literature such as the Oriental, Middle Eastern, and Latin American); (taught for many years);
(4) the Bible as Literature I and II (a secular course, concentrating on the text, its history and its literary qualities) (taught for many years);
(5) Ideas and Literature (political--Marxist; psychological--Freudian; and philosophical--Existential);
(6) Great World Novel;
(7) Contemporary Fiction;
(8) Twentieth Century British Literature;
(9) The Russian and Soviet Novel;
(10) Modern Scandinavian Literature,
((11) Composition; (usually once per semester);
(12) Introduction to Feminist and Gender Studies (a Women's Studies course, annually 1988-1992)
(13) Participation in the Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar, with three other Professors (three years)
           
            Graduate Courses include:
(14) 20th Century British Literature;
(15) Introduction to Graduate Studies in English; and
(16) Literary Criticism and Theory.
