ALL STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR READING AND UNDERSTANDING EACH OF THE THREE ARTICLES. MEMBERS OF A GIVEN TEAM, A, B, OR C, WILL HAVE SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR BEING ABLE TO ANSWER IN CLASS THOSE QUESTIONS SPECIFIED FOR THE ONE ARTICLE TO WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN SPECIFICALLY ASSIGNED.
MEMBERS OF ALL TEAMS SHOULD BE PREPARED TO ANSWER IN CLASS ALL QUESTIONS, FROM ALL THREE ARTICLES, WHERE THE DESIGNATION "ALL TEAMS" APPEARS. FOR THIS CLASS THOSE ITEMS ARE 1 f; 2, f AND g; AND 3 f AND g.
1. Team A; C#7: Schachter and
Singer - Self-Attrib. of Emotion
* In addition to the following, be able to answer questions
at the end of the article..
a. In PSYC 260 you learned what the "two-factor theory of emotion" is. In this study it pertains to the emotions of anger and euphoria. Be able to explain the basic theory to the class.
b. Summarize the basic theoretical hypotheses of this study, and how they relate to the specific situation and variables employed in this study.
c. Describe the experimental design used (be able to present on the board a table of at least a list of the experimental conditions used.)
d. Show which comparisons are relevant to each major hypothesis.
e. Discuss what was found and whether or not it supports the hypotheses being tested.
f. ALL TEAMS - Can you think of another way to manipulate arousal without subjects knowing you have done it? (What difference does it make if they know the real source or not?).
2. Team B; C#13: Dutton and Aron - 2 Factor Theory Love.
* In addition to the following, be able to answer questions at the end of the article..
a. Explain the "two-factor theory of love," and how it relates to the two-factor theory of emotion. Be able to summarize this theory for the class.
b. Summarize the basic theoretical hypotheses of this study.
c. Describe the two experimental designs of the two studies in this article, and be able to explain why the second study was considered necessary. What was the main flaw of the first study which lead to doing a second study?
d. Show which comparisons are relevant to each major hypothesis for each study.
e. What did they find in these studies and how convincing is it as support for the theory?
f. ALL TEAMS - Discuss the issue of External Validity for this study as compared to the Schachter and Singer study.
g. ALL TEAMS - These two studies are both demonstrations of what later theorists call misattribution of arousal. How might arousal due to anger or pain possibly enhance sexual arousal or desire?
3. Team C; C#3: Jones - Actor/Observer Diff. in Attribution
* In addition to the following, be able to answer questions at the end of the article..
a. Summarize what is meant by the Actor-Observer difference or bias.
b. Summarize what is meant by the Fundamental Attribution Error, and show how it is related to the actor/observer difference.
c. Explain Figure 2-1.
d. Be able to discuss issues of internal validity, and possible problems with external validity of the lab studies? How well do the field studies correct for deficiencies of the lab studies?
e. ALL TEAMS - Be able to define and show the relations between each of the following:
1. Fundamental
Attribution Error; 2. Actor/Observer Difference; and 3. Self-Serving Bias, as
for example how each might apply to attributions about performance on a test .
