James Ebert, Earth Sciences Department, and Adolescent Education Earth Science majors Eric Johnsen, Steve Cohn, Aimee Barnabee and Matt Kaszubski presented a workshop entitled “Confronting the Seasons Misconception: An Angle of Insolation Lab That Actually Works” at the annual conference of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. The hands-on workshop unveiled a new apparatus and inquiry-based lab which were conceived and tested in ESCI 315 Laboratory Techniques in Earth Science in the Spring 2005 semester. Although there is a large body of literature documenting students’ misconceptions regarding the causes of the seasons, few solutions are offered. The new apparatus and accompanying activity force students to confront the pervasive misconception that Earth’s seasons are caused by greater distance from the Sun in winter and lead them to the correct conclusion that the seasons result from the tilt of Earth’s axis. The students’ participation in the STANYS conference was supported by the PR2EPS grant and conference logistics were arranged by Paul Bischoff, Secondary Education Department.
