Tuesday, January 21: read Gardner, 13th edition pp. 532-533; 14th edition 550-551 in preparation for discussion of French Court Art: the Limbourg Brothers.

Thursday, January 30: In preparation for our discussion of Flemish Art read in Gardner, 13th edition, pp. 519-529 or Gardner, 14th edition, pp. 535-546. Pay special attention to the comparison of the Annunciation from the Trés riches heures to the so-called Merode Altarpiece attributed to the Master of Flémalle or Robert Campin. Note the contrast of the social settings of these two images.

Tuesday, February 11: First Quiz: will cover material on French Court Art: the Limbourg Brothers and Flemish Art. Read Gardner, 13th edition, 541-562, 14th edition, pp. 559-576 in preparation for our discussion of Early Italian Renaissance Painting and Sculpture: Donatello, Masaccio and Gentile da Fabriano.

Thursday, February 27: read Gardner, 13th ed. pp. 559-560, 568-576; pp. 615-633; 14th ed. 576-582; 590-593 in preparation for our discussion of the "Variety in Quattrocento Painting: Piero della Francesca and Botticelli."

Thursday, March 6: Second Quiz: covers Slide Lists 4 and 5: Early Italian Renaissance Painting and Sculpture: Donatello, Masaccio and Gentile da Fabriano & "Variety in Quattrocento Painting: Piero della Francesca and Botticelli."

Read Gardner, 13th ed. pp. 579-584; 14th ed. pp. 599-605 in preparation for our discussion of the Art and Science of Leonardo da Vinci.

Thursday, March 13: read Gardner 13th ed., pp. 584-587; 14th ed., 605-609 in preparation for our discussion of the art of Raphael.

Thursday, March 20: Exam 1: for details see Exam 1 Format. The exam covers all the material through the slide list on Raphael.

Tuesday, March 25: read Gardner 13th edition, pp. 588-596; 14th edition, pp. 609-618 in preparation for our discussion of the art of Michelangelo.

Thursday, March 27: read Gardner, 13th ed. pp. 612-619; 14th edition, pp. 632-642 in preparation for our discussion of the art of Mannerism.

Tuesday, April 8: read Gardner, 13th ed. pp. 749-665; 14th ed. 669-684 in preparation for our discussion of the art of Caravaggio and Bernini. Views of David.

Thursday, April 10: We will continue our examination of Bernini. We will also go on to discuss Flemish and Spanish Baroque Painting. Read Gardner, 13th ed., pp. 665-679; 14th ed. 687-701 in preparation. Review the page I have constructed discussing Velázquez's Las Meninas.

Tuesday, April 15: Third Quiz: will cover material on Slide Lists 11, 12, 13, and 14. We will go on to an examination of Dutch Painting. Read Gardner 13th ed. 679-691; 14th ed. pp. 702-713.

Thursday, April 17: We will go on to an examination of the Art of Rembrandt. If we have the time, we will begin an examination of French painting. Read Gardner, 13th ed. pp. 691-701 and 751-757; 14th ed. pp. 714-722 and 727-735 for our discussion of French Baroque Painting and Rococo Painting in France.

Thursday, April 24: Read Gardner, 13th edition pp. 757-774 or 14th edition pp. 736-737, 745-752, in preparation for our discussion of Neo-Classical Painting.

Tuesday, April 29: Fourth Quiz: will cover material on Slide Lists 15, 16, and 17. The format of the quiz will be seven matching questions with artists' names being matched with a brief identification of the artist. The final three questions will be multiple choice questions in response to a selected image.

Romanticism: Read Gardner, 13th edition, pp. 777-798 or 14th edition, 755-775.

Thursday, May 1: read Gardner, 13th edition, pp. 798-809 or 14th edition, pp. 775-782 in preparation for a discussion of Realism.

Tuesday, May 6, Fifth Quiz: will cover Slide Lists 18, 19, 20, and 21. The format of the quiz will be matching questions with the names of the artists in one column and a brief identification with reference to a specific work in the other column.

The remainder of the class will be dedicated to review in preparation for the Second Exam.

Thursday, May 8: Second Exam, 2:00- 4:30 PM, IRC 2. See Format of the Second Exam.
