Access to Chem 322 - Organic Chemistry II - Laboratory Resources

Some of the material here is in Adobe Acrobat® file format. To read Adobe Acrobat® files the web browser you are using must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader available.  On most computers, if the Reader is present, as you attempt to download the Acrobat file, the Adobe Reader will self-launch and you will see the contents of the file shortly. On other computers a dialog box will open that gives you the option of opening the file you are downloading; you should select that option and the Adobe Acrobat Reader will then open the file in the browser window.  If opening the file in the browser is not an option provided by the browser's dialog box, but saving it is, save it to the hard disk and remember which folder or directory you placed it in.  If you can find the Adobe Acrobat Reader on the computer, open it and click on the File menu, then on Open, and then select the lecture outline file you downloaded (it will have a .pdf extension in its name).  If you cannot find the Adobe Reader on your computer, go here and download the reader that is appropriate for your platform (Windows or McIntosh, depending on the type of computer you are using).  Follow the directions for installing the software.  Once the software is installed you can launch the Acrobat Reader and use it to open the Acrobat (.pdf) files and it should lauch automatically when your browser encounters Acrobat files.

Other Chem 322 Laboratory Resources


1. There is a set of NMR tables available in the NMR room. For the most part these tables provide information to help you predict the chemical shifts of atoms that are in certain molecular environments. The most extensive tables relate to proton NMR but there are tables for C-13 NMR, also. There are also tables that list the chemical shifts of carbons and protons for common NMR solvents and common impurities. These same tables are available at the Reserve (Circulation) Desk in Milne Library; the call number is 21716SH.

2. There is a website that provides infrared spectra for common compounds -- perhaps for your unknowns. These spectra are linear in wavenumber so they should "look like" your spectra, unlike the spectra in the vintage Sadtler collection which are linear in wavelength. You can search by compound name or you can draw the structure of the compound using a simple structure-drawing applet at the web site and search that. 2. The second portion of the laboratory course in Chem 322 involves your doing a three-week project. You can select one of three projects. The project descriptions and the experimental procedures are on two-hour reserve at the circulation desk in Milne Library. The call numbers you will need to secure the documents are as follows:

No more than 4 students in any lab section can select the same project. Sign-up sheets will be available in your lab section the week of March 7th. When you have signed up for a project, you should photocopy the procedure in the library before you start the project.
