PRESS RELEASES: Friday, June 24, 2005 By PERRY L. NOVAK Dispatch Sports Editor ONEIDA — Leo Matzke and Matt LoPiccolo derived the same amount of fun competing in the sixth annual Wilber-Duck Mile Friday night. It just took LoPiccolo less time to do so. The Oneonta State cross country and track and field coach set a course record with his 4:12 to win the featured open division. “That’s the fastest time on the course,” the 29-year-old said. “It felt really good. I ran the Rome race a couple weeks ago and took third there. I trained really hard the last couple weeks.” LoPiccolo earned his second Wilber-Duck title by edging Scott Weeks by three seconds and Kevin Collins by five in, perhaps, the race’s fastest field. There were a handful of runners close behind the leaders, too, making it a real crowd pleaser for the many city residents who lined the course and cheered on the 100-plus who took part. “It’s community spirit,” Matzke, Oneida’s 60-year-old mayor, said. “I love this kind of event.” Matzke took part in the first event. The 7 (minute)-plus runners and walkers went together at 7 p.m. and about 20 minutes later Matzke was among a group of walkers crossing the line with smiles as big as their times. “I’m so out of shape,” Matzke said with a smile, “but it’s an instant camaraderie with others (walking) with you. It’s nice to see the families, too.” It wasn’t a family affair in the literal sense for Judy Johnson, but it was figuratively. The 28-year-old Atlanta native won the women’s open division with a 5:02. She ran the race for the first time since moving to Manlius. Her boyfriend is Collins - one of the area’s most accomplished runners - and she two-upped his third place by holding off Sara Steiner (5:11) and Mary Beth Romagnoli (5:19) down Broad Street’s last 800 yards for the title. “He got a P.R. (personal record) today, so that’s neat,” Johnson said after her win. “I just did it for fun and as part of my training.” Johnson, known more for her distance running, struggled a little afterward to catch her breath on a perfect-but-hot summer evening. “I’m more of a distance runner, so anytime I drop down it hurts more and it takes longer to catch my breath,” Johnson said. Matzke didn’t have to catch his breath, but something following him did in one of the comic twists of the event. “We were going so slow I think the ambulance, the one chasing us, overheated,” the mayor said with a chuckle. Robert Gripko (4:50) edged Ryan Wilkinson by a second and Ryan Miling was third for the 5-plus men’s title while Brittany Streeter (6:11) won the women’s. In the Master’s men’s race, David Cole (4:47) won followed by Fred Miller and David Bowen. Coreen Steinbach (6:03) won the Master’s women’s crown ahead of Linda Glowacki. In the 6-plus group, Evan Croll (5:46) won the men’s ahead of Scott Adams and Clayton Reynolds while Rebecca Robbins (6:03) won the women’s ahead of Lauren MacDonald and Dedra Croll. Rachel Vollmer (6:40) won the women’s 7-plus race as Katie Wartella and Anne Leadley took second and third respectively while Jeff McIntyre (7:10) beat Chance Bear and Paul Froass for the men’s title. “We’re going in the right direction,” Frank Duck, one of the race sponsors, said afterward. “I’m pleased we had more people from Oneida participate.” Matzke plans to boost 2006’s numbers, too. “I think next year we’ll have to bring a team to represent the city,” Matzke said. Sunday, February 27, 2005 (Boston) The Syracuse Chargers Track Club won their first USATF National Club Invitational Distance Medley Relay at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships February 27 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The Chargers dominated the event finishing in 10:00.97 - over 14 seconds faster than the second place finisher the Central Park Track Club.
Highlighting the accomplishment was anchor leg Derek Treadwell. He received the baton with an already big 40 meter lead and increased it substantially over the next eight laps. His first 800 split of 2:03.0 took the possibility of a win out of reach for the competition and the prospect of an impressive split likely. The solitude of the final four laps didn’t slow Treadwell as he traveled the distance in 2:03.8 with each 200 faster than the previous. – 31.8, 31.6, 31.1 and 29.3. “I knew I was in good shape a few weeks ago when I ran 3x1600 with 2:45 rest in 4:28, 4:27 and 4:17. I am really happy with today’s run,” said Treadwell after the awards ceremony. “It’s where I want to be right now.” Treadwell’s split was the fastest 1600m relay split ever for a Chargers athlete.
Matt LoPiccolo, Kris Enwright and Scott Weeks gave Treadwell the comfortable lead he enjoyed. LoPiccolo got things rolling for the Chargers in the 1200 leg. The race went out slowly – almost 17 seconds for the first 100 – before the race really began. His first 400 meters of 61.6 kept all the teams in the race but his second 400 of 59.9 (2:01.5-800) really put the Chargers in front with a lead they would never relinquish. LoPiccolo handed off in 3:05.3 to Enwright who handled the baton for the 2-lapper splitting 52.4. Then Chargers 1000m club record holder, Scott Weeks, split 1:56.4 for the 800 leg before handing off to Treadwell.
“The overall time may not be great but we are really happy with the win and Tread’s time,” was the comment by both LoPiccolo and Weeks after the event. “That’s a solid start to the outdoor season.”
