Oneonta State closed their first year of competition since 1978 with a small meet at Hartwick College. Junior Chad Calhoun had his best throw of the season in the hammer. He placed 2nd with a SUNYAC qualifying throw of 39.48 meters (129' 6"). 2002 was Calhoun's first year ever throwing the hammer. The Red Dragons will again enter official NCAA Division III, SUNYAC, and ECAC competition in the winter and spring of 2003. New SUNYAC Qualifiers: Hammer: 2nd - Chad Calhoun (Jr.), 39.48m (129' 6")
University at Albany Spring Classic - Friday, May 10th, 2002 Despite fierce winds, Oneonta State had some good decent performances in placing 14th out of 25 teams with 15 points. Freshman Dan Cain, sprinted his way to a personal best of :23.02 in placing 10th in the 200 meters. He also ran 2nd leg on the 4th place 1600 meter relay team with Kwame White, Lou Mazzarisi, and Chris Smith in a time of 3:27.42. Freshman Matt Valcik hit the SUNYAC standard in placing 18th in 800 with a time of 2:02.66, as well as junior Eric Duffy in the javelin with a throw of 44.00 meters (144' 4") that placed him 9th. Oneonta State May Meet - Saturday, May 4th, 2002
The Penn Relays - Friday, April 26th, 2002 Oneonta State had a great showing in their first ever trip to the Penn Relays. Lou Mazzarisi, Kwame White, Chris Smith, and Dan Cain opened up the day for the Red Dragons by placing 5th in their heat of the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:33.51. The same quartet had an impressive 2nd place finish in their heat of the 4x400 meter relay in a new school record of 3:26.13. You can view the races at www.TrackMeets.com.
Hartwick College Invitational - Saturday, April 20th, 2002 The Red Dragons racked up more qualifiers for SUNYAC's when they battled cross town rival Hartwick. Sophomore Chris Smith took home first place in the javelin with a SUNYAC qualifying toss of 49.79m (163' 4"). He also anchored the 1,600 meter relay team of Lou Mazzarisi, Dan Cain, and Vin Verteramo to an exciting victory over Hartwick College in a time of 3:26.86. Dick Shea Open @ West Point - Saturday, April 13th, 2002 After heavy rains subsided, the Red Dragons got down to business in calm, but foggy conditions at West Point. There were many new qualifiers for SUNYAC's. New SUNYAC Qualifiers: 100 meters: 4th - Dan Cain (Fr.), :11.36
Ithaca College Invitational - Saturday, April 6th, 2002 Despite bitter cold and blustery conditions at Ithaca College, Oneonta State got some surprisingly good performances. Junior Chad Calhoun made his presence felt immediately. He opened up the day for the Red Dragons with a SUNYAC qualifying throw in the hammer. He threw 31.94 meters (104' 9") and placed 6th in his first ever hammer competition. Then, he picked up his discus and threw 36.01 meters (118' 1") good for 4th place and another SUNYAC qualifying performance. He finished his day with an 11th place finish in the shot put with a throw of 10.18 meters (33' 4 3/4"). Sophomore Chris Smith placed 6th in the javelin with a SUNYAC qualifying throw of 45.05 meters (147' 9") and ran 3rd leg on the 4x100 meter relay team which placed 7th in a time of :45.6. He was joined by freshmen Lou Mazzarisi, Vin Verteramo, and sophomore Kwame White. New SUNYAC Qualifiers: Hammer: 6th - Chad Calhoun (Jr.), 104' 9"
Battleground Relays @ Mary Washington College - Saturday, March 30th, 2002 The Red Dragons finished their 10 day southern trip at the Battleground Relays in Fredericksburg, VA at Mary Washington College. Sophomore Chris Smith continued to lead the charge. He placed 7th in the javelin with a SUNYAC qualifying throw of 158' 7", ran 3rd leg on the 4x200 meter relay team that placed 5th in a time of 1:32.8 and anchored the 4x400 meter relay team to a victory in their heat, and 6th overall in a time of 3:31.7. He was joined on the 4x200 by freshmen Lou Mazzarisi and Vin Verteramo, and sophomore Kwame White. Mazzarisi and Verteramo also teamed with Smith and freshman Matt Valcik on the 4x400. New SUNYAC Qualifiers: Javelin: 7th - Chris Smith (So.), 158' 7"
Disney's Track & Field Showcase - Saturday, March 23rd, 2002 Oneonta State opened up it's new era of outdoor track & field with it's first meet since 1978. The Red Dragons had an impressive showing in placing 2nd out of 7 teams with 70 points at Disney's Track & Field Showcase in Orlando, FL. Leading the way for O-State was sophomore Chris Smith, who won the Javelin with a SUNYAC qualfying throw of 44.71 meters (146' 8"), was 3rd in the 400 meters with another SUNYAC qualifying performance of :52.61, and ended the day by anchoring the Red Dragons to victory in the 1600 meter relay in a time of 3:34.50. Smith was joined on that team by sophomore Kwame White, and freshmen Vin Verteramo and Bryan Reles. White and Verteramo each hit SUNYAC standards in the 100 (2nd place - 11.73) and 200 (5th place - 23.56), respectively. They were also joined by freshman Lou Mazzarisi and sophomore Ryan Curran in winning the 400 meter relay in a time of :45.64. The Red Dragons completed their inaugural season with a solid showing at Plattsburgh. Freshman Dan Cain led the way in winning 3 events (55, Long Jump, and Triple Jump). Hitting SUNYAC standards were sophomore Chris Smith in the 400 (3rd place - :53.61) and freshman Vin Verteramo in the 200 (3rd-:24.55). Oneonta State will open it's outdoor season on March 23rd at the Disney Track & Field Showcase in Orlando, Florida. SUNYAC Qualifiers: 200 meters: 3rd - Vin Verteramo (Fr.), :24.55
Robert Kane Invitational @ Cornell University - Saturday, February 9th, 2002 Sophomore Brian Suozzo had the highest place finish of the day for the Red Dragons with a 4th place finish in the 3000 meters. Suozzo ran a tremendous race in bettering his personal best with a time of 8:59.39, just missing the ECAC qualifying standard of 8:58.04. He previously hit the SUNYAC qualifying standard at the Syracuse Invitational. Sophomore Chris Smith also had a great day for Oneonta State. He placed 12th in the 200 meters with a SUNYAC qualifying time of :23.90 and ran a 52.0 lead-off leg for the 1600 meter relay team which won their heat and placed 6th overall in a time of 3:30.25. He teamed with freshmen Dan Cain, Vin Verteramo, and Lou Mazzarisi. SUNYAC Qualifiers: 60 meters: 12th - Dan Cain (Fr.), :07.31
Syracuse University Invitational - Sunday, February 3rd, 2002 The Red Dragons improved for the 2nd straight week. Sophomores Brian Suozzo and Kwame White-Tatum hit the SUNYAC Standard in the 3000 meters and 200 meter respectively, as did freshman Lou Mazzarisi in the 400 meters. Suozzo placed 6th in a time of 9:01.11, White-Tatum placed 17th in a time of :24.58, and Mazzarisi placed 7th in a time of :52.85. Mazzarisi also anchored the 4th place 1600 meter relay team of Chris Smith, Dan Cain, and Vin Verteramo in a time of 3:30.46. SUNYAC Qualifiers: 200 meters: 17th - Kwame White-Tatum (So.), :24.58
St. Lawrence University Indoor Track Classic - Saturday, January 26th, 2002 Oneonta State placed 5th with 22 points. They were led by freshman Dan Cain, who placed second in the 55 meter dash in a SUNYAC qualifying time of :06.74. Sophomore Chris Smith also had a good day in running PR's in the 55 meter dash (:07.08), 200 meters (:24.14) and leading off the 4x400 meter relay team in :53.6. The team was also composed of freshmen Matt Valcik, Brian Connolly, and Lou Mazzarisi and placed 4th in a time of 3:36.5. SUNYAC Qualifiers: 55 meters: 2nd - Dan Cain (Fr.), :06.74
Hamilton College Invitational - Saturday, January 19th, 2002 The Red Dragons placed 4th with 70 points in the first meet of the new semester. The highlight of the day was saved for the last event as the 4x200 meter relay team of Lou Mazzarisi, Brian Connolly, Chris Smith, and Vin Verteramo pulled out the victory in a time of 1:38.51.
