ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ MIT - THURSDAY-FRIDAY, MAY 15-16, 2003 The Red Dragons finished off
their first official year of NCAA competition at the ECAC Championships.
Shaun Hurley was the top finisher placing 10th in the high jump with a leap
of 6' 2". Chris Smith finished 12th in the javelin with a toss of 167'
0". Smith teamed with Kwame White, Vin Verteramo, and Tim Wood to
place 13th in the 4x100 meter relay in a time of :45.10.
UNIVERSITY @ ALBANY SPRING CLASSIC - SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2003 Oneonta State placed 13th out of
26 teams with 17 points. Leading the way were ECAC qualifiers Shaun
Hurley and Chris Smith. Both men finished 4th in their respective
events. Hurley bettered his own school record and ECAC qualifying
performance from earlier in the season with a jump of 1.94 meters (6' 4
1/4") in the high jump. Smith bettered his own school record in the
javelin with a clutch ECAC qualifying throw of 51.84 meters (170' 1").
This was Smith's last meet to qualify for next week's championship.
Also setting school records were Matt Valcik in the 800 with a time of
1:59.56 and Bryan Reles in the Steeplechase with a time of 10:28.78.
Setting personal bests were Bryan Stringer in the Javelin with a throw of
43.50m (142' 8"), and Vin Verteramo and Eric Duffy in the 400 (52.17 and
52.66, respectively). For Duffy, it was a fitting finish, as it was
his final race as a Red Dragon. He will be graduating next weekend.
ONEONTA STATE MAY MEET - SATURDAY, MAY 3, 2003 The 4x100 meter relay foursome
of Kwame White, Vin Verteramo, Tim Wood, and Chris Smith broke the school
record and qualified for the ECAC Championships in taking home the win.
The Red Dragons won 6 events on the day and broke 4 school records.
SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ DIETZ STADIUM (NEW PALTZ) - SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2003 Oneonta State placed 8th overall
with 29 points improving 1 place from the indoor championships. Chris
Smith led the way for the Red Dragons. He was the top finisher on the
day, placing 2nd in the Javelin in a school record throw of 51.06 meters
(167' 6"). He also placed 6th in the 400 meters in a time of :52.51
and anchored the 4x100 meter relay to a 3rd place finish in a time of
:44.95. Kwame White, Vin Verteramo, and Tim Wood joined Smith on the
relay. White and Verteramo teamed with Matt Valcik and Eric Duffy to
finish 4th in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 4:29.75. Transfer
Shaun Hurley had a big impact for the Red Dragons in the jumps. He
placed 4th in the high jump and jumped a 3 foot personal best to take 3rd in
the triple jump and qualify for ECAC's with a jump of 13.12 meters (43'
1/2").
HARTWICK COLLEGE INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 2003 Oneonta State co-hosted the
Hartwick College Invitational with all but the throwing events at the Red
Dragon's All College Field. The Red Dragons placed 2nd with 140
points. Sophomore Shaun Hurley became the 1st individual male in the
new era of track & field to hit an ECAC standard. He won the high jump
in a new personal best jump of 1.91 meters (6' 3 1/4"). Hurley also
bettered his previous SUNYAC qualifying performance in the triple jump with
an effort of 12.31 meters (40' 4 3/4"). Freshman Kyle Dresser won the
Discus in a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying throw of 36.37m (119' 4").
ITHACA COLLEGE OPEN INVITATIONAL - THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2003 The throwers led the way at the
non-scoring Ithaca Open. Taylor Arnold had a huge day with new
personal bests and SUNYAC qualifying throws of 39.34 meters (129' 1") and
31.76 meters (104' 2") in the discus and hammer, respectively.
DELHI BRONCO MEET - TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2003 A couple Red Dragon throwers
traveled over the hill to Delhi for a Tuesday meet. Chris Smith and
Eric Duffy went 1-2 in the javelin with Smith leading the way in throwing
farther than he has in 2 years. He won the competition in a SUNYAC
leading throw of 50.41 meters (165' 4"). Duffy finished with a season
best throw of 43.60 meters (143' 0").
UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER ALUMNI INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2003 The Red Dragons placed 13th with
21 points. Both Kwame White (100, 200) and Shaun Hurley (high jump,
triple jump) qualified for SUNYAC's in 2 events each. Brian Suozzo
returned to the track and qualified for SUNYAC's in the 5,000.
DICK SHEA OPEN @ WEST POINT - SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2003 The Red Dragons opened up their
2003 outdoor season with a non-scoring meet at Army. Five athletes hit
the SUNYAC standard in 3 events. Junior Chris Smith led the way by
placing 8th in the Javelin with a throw of 48.67 meters (159' 8").

ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ TUFTS UNIVERSITY - FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2003
On Friday night, the 4x200 meter relay team of sophomores Lou Mazzarisi and Vin Verteramo, and juniors Kwame
White and Chris Smith placed 17th out of 21 teams in a time of 1:35.34.
The same foursome came back to run the 4x400 meter relay on Saturday afternoon.
The SUNYAC Champs placed 2nd in their heat and 11th overall in a time of
3:28.62, which was just off their school record of 3:26.93 set a week ago.
NYU FASTRACK INVITATIONAL @ NY ARMORY - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2003
School records fell and the 4x400 continued to
run well, this time qualifying for the ECAC Championships next weekend at
Tufts. Sophomores Lou Mazzarisi and Vin Verteramo teamed with
juniors Kwame White and Chris Smith once again to solidify their throne
atop the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons held off Cortland and New Paltz for
the 2nd week in a row and placed 9th overall in a school record and ECAC
qualifying time of 3:26.93. Running splits of 52.0, 51.8, 51.8, and
51.2, respectively, they placed 3rd in their heat. Earlier in the
day, Smith broke Verteramo's school record in the 400 with a time of
:51.99 and Mazzarisi broke White's school record in the 200 with a time of
:23.45. In addition, the 4x800 relay team of sophomore Matt Valick,
freshman Kyle Walcott, senior Eric Duffy, and junior Dan Verdi knocked 13
seconds off the school record and placed 5th in a time of 8:21.25.
SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ HOBART/WILLIAM SMITH - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2003
Competing for the first time as a varsity
program at the meet, the Red Dragons were able to finish ninth with 14
points. The highlight of the day for Oneonta was the 4x400-meter
relay team narrowly edging Cortland's foursome for the SUNYAC title in
that event. Junior Chris Smith (Patterson, NY/Carmel) ran the anchor
leg and was able to hold-off both Cortland and Geneseo in the final five
meters. The foursome had a time of 3:28.46 just ahead of Cortland
(3:28.53) and Geneseo (3:29.29). The Oneonta relay squad also
included sophomore Lou Mazzarisi (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) who
ran the leadoff leg, classmate Vin Verteramo (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor
Farrell) who ran second, and junior Kwame White (Albany, NY/Albany) who
handed off to Smith. White and Verteramo also won medals in their
individual events for Oneonta. White placed sixth in the 200-meter
dash in a school-record time of 23.49 while Verteramo was fifth in the
400-meter dash in a school-record time of 52.49. The quartet of
sophomore Matt Valcik, freshman Kyle Walcott, senior Eric Duffy, and
junior Dan Verdi also scored for the Red Dragons placing 6th in the 4x800
meter relay in a school record time of 8:34.93.
TUFTS UNIVERSITY STAMPEDE - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2003 In their final preparation
prior to the SUNYAC Championship meet next weekend, the Oneonta State
men’s indoor track & field team competed at the Tufts University Stampede.
Although the meet was a non-scoring situation, the team had more athletes
hit conference and ECAC qualifying times in the meet. Six
individuals and two relay foursomes hit SUNYAC qualifying standards led by
sophomore Matt Valcik (Latham, NY/Shaker) who was the top finisher on the
day with a third place finish in the 800 meters. The 4x400-meter
relay squad of juniors Kwame White (Albany, NY/Albany) and Chris Smith
(Patterson, NY/Carmel) and sophomores Lou Mazzarisi (Staten Island,
NY/Monsignor Farrell) and Vin Verteramo (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor
Farrell) took first place overall with a school-record time of 3:28.23.
Mazzarisi and White also qualified individually for the SUNYAC
championships in the 200-meter dash while Smith and Verteramo hit the
individual standards in the 400-meter dash. Junior Dan Verdi
(Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) hit the standard for the 1,500 meters and
was part of the 4x800-meter relay foursome that hit the mark.
Valcik, senior Eric Duffy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and freshman Kyle
Walcott (Maybrook, NY/Valley Central) joined Verdi as part of the
3,200-meter relay foursome that was third overall in the event in a time
of 8:40.65.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL
- SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2003
DICK DESHRIVER INVITATIONAL @ EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2003
Oneonta State had three individuals hit new
SUNYAC qualifying times. Junior Chris Smith and sophomore Lou
Mazzarisi set school records in winning their heats in the 400 and 200
meters, respectively. Smith ran :52.59 breaking Mazzarisi's previous
school record of :52.85 set at Cornell last February. Mazzarisi got
his name back up on the record board later in the day, with a blazing
:23.65 in the 200. Sophomore Vin Verteramo also qualified for
SUNYAC's with a time of :24.01.
ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2003
Oneonta State placed 7th out of 8 teams with
31 points. They were led by the sprint core of juniors Chris Smith
and Kwame White, and sophomores Lou Mazzarisi and Vin Verteramo. The
quartet teamed to place 2nd in the 4x200 meter relay in a school record
and ECAC qualifying time of 1:34.34. Mazzarisi qualified for
SUNYAC's in the 55 and 200 meters with times of :06.78 and :23.89,
respectively, while Smith and White ran identical times of :23.98 in the
200 in qualifying for SUNYAC's. Verteramo ran a time of :53.50 in
hitting the SUNYAC standard in the 400 meters. "These guys have been
working hard," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "We will
continue to see great things from them." Also having breakthrough
days and qualifying for SUNYAC's were sophomores Matt Valcik and Taylor
Arnold. Valcik placed 8th in the 1000 meters in a personal best time
of 2:41.77 and Arnold placed 8th in the 35 lb. weight throw with a
personal best heave of 12.30m (40" 4 1/4").
UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 2003 Oneonta State placed 6th out
of 6 teams with 33 points. They were led by sophomore Lou Mazzarisi,
who was the only Red Dragon to win an event. He won the 55 meters in
a SUNYAC qualifying time of :06.79. He also placed 3rd in the 200
meters with another qualifying time of :24.72 on the slow U of R track.
Junior Chris Smith also qualified in both events with times of :06.86 and
:25.29 to place 3rd and 8th, respectively. Junior Kwame White and
sophomore Vin Verteramo got in the act as well, placing 5th in the 55
meters (:06.86) and 7th in the 200 meters (:25.22), respectively.
DARTMOUTH COLLEGE RELAYS - SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 2003 Oneonta State opened up 2003 with a school record in the 4x200 meter relay. The quartet of junior Enndy Durena, sophomore Tim Wood, and juniors Ryan Curran and Chris Smith placed 8th in a time of 1:38.27 in the highly competitive meet.
CORNELL UNIVERSITY RELAYS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2002 The Red
Dragons opened up the 2003 season with school records and SUNYAC
qualifiers at the Cornell University Relays. Junior captain Chris
Smith and sophomore Lou Mazzarisi led the way in placing 7th in the 300
meters and 10th in 60 meters in times of :36.92 and :07.29, respectively.
Also, setting a personal best was senior Enoch Bunche. He placed
14th in the triple jump with a leap of 12.26 meters. All three men
set school records and qualified for the SUNYAC Championship to be held on
Saturday, February 22, 2003 at Hobart/William Smith. Smith and
Mazzarisi also teamed with sophomore Vin Verteramo and freshman Chris
Torres to place 10th in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 3:34.42.
