NCAA Championships
@ Wartburg College (IA) Saturday, May 28, 2005 Senior Tom O'Neill ended his collegiate career with an All-American performance in 100 meters at the NCAA Championships. His time of 10.80 seconds placed him 5th in the competition. He came into the meet as the 17th seed and advanced to the final as the 6th seed. From there, he moved up one more spot to claim his spot on the podium. "I am extremely proud of Tom," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "He ran two great races on the biggest stage that we have. He is truly an All-American." His 4 points placed O-State in a tie for 44th place in the team standings. He is the first male to earn outdoor All-American honors in new era of track & field at Oneonta. NCAA Finals: 100 meters: 5th - Tom O'Neill (SR), 10.80 Friday, May 27, 2005 Senior Tom O'Neill advanced to the finals of the 100 meters at the NCAA Championships with a 10.75 second clocking. He took 2nd in his heat and 6th overall to advance. He came into the meet as the 17th seed. His time was 2 hundredths of a second off his school record of 10.73. He'll run in lane 2 on Saturday at 2:30pm CT. NCAA Preliminaries: 100 meters: 6th - Tom O'Neill (SR), 10.75 ECAC Championships @ Springfield College (MA) - Thursday-Friday, May 19-20, 2005 For the third time in 2005, Shaun Hurley saved his best triple jump for last. The senior leaped 14.19 meters on his last attempt to hit the NCAA provisional standard. Previously, he won the indoor and outdoor SUNYAC triple jump titles coming from behind to take the victory on his last attempt of the competition. This time, he did it on potentially his last jump of his college career. He'll have to wait until Monday to see if it was good enough to make the trip to Wartburg, Iowa for the NCAA Championships next weekend. His jump placed him 3rd in the event and also broke his own school record. "He has proven before that he is a clutch jumper," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "Mike Schmidt (associate head coach) reminded him of that before his last jump and he came through one last time." He also placed 8th in the high jump with a leap of 1.94 meters. Junior Adam Remillard placed 8th in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 13.38 meters. He also PR'd in the long jump with a mark of 6.51 meters to place 13th. Senior Tom O'Neill had a big day to lead the Red Dragons in scoring. He placed 6th in the 100 meters and 4th in the 200 meters with times of 10.93 and 21.94, respectively. He'll also be waiting until Monday to see if he gets his NCAA bid. He is provisionally qualified in 100, 200, and 400 meters. On the day, O-State scored 15.5 points to place 21st out of 47 teams. Senior Tom O'Neill qualified for NCAA's in his 3rd different event this outdoor season by winning the 400 meters. His time of 48.47 reached the NCAA Provisional mark and set school, track, and meet records. He also ran 2nd leg on the 4x100 relay that hit the ECAC standard with a time of 43.11. Junior Aundrae Dair won the 100, placed 2nd in the 200, and handed the baton to O'Neill as the lead-off leg in the 4x100. His time of 11.19 in the 100 broke the meet record and his 200 time of 22.59 was an ECAC qualifying time. Senior Shaun Hurley anchored the 4x100 relay, as well as taking the win in the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 13.60 meters. Junior Adam Remillard ran the 3rd leg on the 4x100 relay and placed 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 6.32 meters. Sophomore Jeremy Cline placed 2nd in the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying mark of 13.06 meters. His times of 10.73 and 21.65, respectively reached the NCAA Provisional standards and broke the existing meet records. He also anchored the 4x100 meter relay team to a 4th place finish and ran 2nd leg on the 3rd place 4x400 meter relay team that hit the ECAC standard with a time of 3:24.06. Seniors Tom O'Neill and Shaun Hurley each won 2 events to lead the charge. O'Neill blazed away from the field in both the 100 and 200. He won the 100 by .5 seconds and the 200 by an equally impressive 1.2 seconds. Hurley's leaps in the high jump (1.90 meters) and triple jump (13.44 meters) reached the ECAC qualifying standards. Junior Ryan Walter won the 5,000 meters for the 3rd year in a row. He won the 2 previous O-State Invitationals as a freshman and sophomore for Delhi College. His time of 15:48.7 this year was a personal best. The Red Dragons play host to the SUNYAC Championships this coming Friday and Saturday beginning at 2:00pm and 10:00am, respectively. He also added a 7th place finish in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.98. Senior Tom O'Neill placed 7th in the 100 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 11.13. Classmate Taylor Arnold took 3rd in the hammer throw with a heave of 41.25 meters, good enough for SUNYAC qualification. Junior Ryan Wells placed 4th in the 800 meters, running 1:58.25 and breaking his school record he set last week at Delaware. Senior Tim Wood improved his SUNYAC 200 meter qualifying time by dashing to a 23.55 clocking. Sophomore Nick Scalfone placed 3rd in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:08.75, which broke Brian Suozzo's school record of 9:20.13 set in May of 2002 at Oneonta. Junior Ryan Walter finished right behind Scalfone in 9:09.03 with sophomore Matt Durkin continuing his rapid improvement by placing 9th in a personal best time of 9:28.96. The Red Dragons start a three weekend home stand on the 23rd of April with the O-State Invitational, which starts at noon at All College Track & Field Facility. Eleven SUNYAC qualifying marks were hit on the day. Sophomore Jeremy Cline was the highest placer as he took 2nd in the triple jump with a leap of 12.19 meters. Senior Shaun Hurley placed 4th in the long jump with a leap of 6.34 meters. Juniors Aundrae Dair (100-11.43), Ryan Wells (800-1:58.49), and Adam Remillard (Long Jump-6.32m), and senior Taylor Arnold (Hammer-39.13m) all placed 6th in the DII & DII competition. In the 800, Wells broke the school record of 1:59.56 set by Matt Valcik at Albany in May of 2003. NCAA Championships @ Illinois Wesleyan Saturday, March 12, 2005 Seniors Tom O'Neill and Tim Wood along with juniors Art Driscoll and Scott Pollard earned All-American honors by placing 5th in the finals of the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 3:19.71. Driscoll led off once again with a 49.5 split. He handed to O'Neill who who split 49.3. Wood followed with a 51.5 and Pollard anchored in 49.0, almost catching Nebraska Wesleyan at the line. Earlier in the day, senior Shaun Hurley placed 14th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.95 meters (45' 9 1/4"). The Red Dragons finished tied for 38th in the country with 4 points. "I am very proud of these guys," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "They have brought Oneonta Track & Field back into the NCAA spotlight and we plan to stay there." Driscoll led off the relay with a 49.4 with O'Neill following with a 49.6 split. Wood was 3rd for the Red Dragons with a 51.3 split and finally Pollard, the SUNYAC 400 champion, anchored with a blazing 48.7. Senior Shaun Hurley was the highest placing Red Dragon. He took home 2nd place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.00 meters, just 6 cm short of the winner. He also placed 12th in the long jump with a mark of 6.44 meters. Sophomore Jeremy Cline joined Hurley on the awards stand in the triple jump. He placed 7th with a jump of 13.14 meters. Junior Art Driscoll finished 4th in the 400 in a time of 50.53. Senior Tom O'Neill was just behind in 50.57, good enough for 6th. Junior Scott Pollard was 10th in the 400 as well, in a time of 50.97. The trio joined with senior Tim Wood to place 5th in the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:24.17. Junior Art Driscoll led the way, in placing 3rd in the 400 meters in a personal best and NCAA provisional time of 49.15. He also led off (49.3) the 4x400 meter relay team with classmate Scott Pollard (49.3) and seniors Tim Wood (51.0) and Tom O'Neill (48.4). The quartet crossed the line in 4th in a time of 3:18.08, good enough for the NCAA provisional standard and a school record by 6 seconds. The same foursome set the previous record a week earlier at SUNYAC's. They are currently ranked 4th in NCAA Division III. Another school record was set, as sophomore Nick Scalfone beat his own mark in running 15:38.26 for 5,000 meters. Over at the weight throw at Manhattan College, senior Taylor Arnold launched his own school record attack in tossing the 35 pound weight 15.61 meters, well beyond the ECAC standard of 15.01. "I feel great for Taylor," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "He has worked diligently for this and now he's knocking on NCAA's door." Last year, they finished 5th with 47 points. They were led, as they were last year, by senior Shaun Hurley who won two individual events while tying for 2nd place in a third. Hurley defended his crown in the triple jump while adding the long jump title to his resume. He covered 45’ 10” in the triple on his last attempt of the day, while leaping 22’ 9” to win the long jump. He just missed pulling off the difficult triple win. He finished with a 2nd place medal in the high jump, which he had won at last year’s meet. Right behind Hurley for titles won was junior Scott Pollard who won the 400 and ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay that won as well. In winning the 400, Pollard edged out teammate Art Driscoll by .06 in an ECAC qualifying time of 50.31. The 4x400 relay came across the line in a meet record of 3:24.26, which Driscoll was part of as well. He also placed 3rd place finish in the 200. Senior Tom O’Neill was part of the winning relay, running an anchor leg of 49.5. He also placed 2nd in both the 55 and 200, where he set school records of 6.53 and 22.15, respectively. Junior Ryan Wells ran a time of 4:01.08 to place 3rd the 1500 meters and break the school record. He then came back to place 3rd in the 1000 in a time of 2:36.19. He also teamed with classmates Joe Melanson and Justin Cortright and senior Matt Valcik to place 5th in a time of 8:27.25 in the 4x800 relay. Sophomore Jeremy Cline took 3rd in the triple jump (43' 5 3/4") while teammate freshman Tim Moran was 5th with a 3 leap total of 43' 1". Moran also finished 4th in the 55 hurdles in a time of 8.28. Senior Taylor Arnold placed 4th in the weight throw with a heave of 49' 1/4". Sophomore Nick Scalfone and junior Ryan Walter placed 7th and 8th, respectively in the 3000 with times of 9:05.76 and 9:07.46. They started the day by teaming with Valcik and senior Enndy Durena in place 2nd in the Distance Medley Relay in a school record time of 10:52.64. The team attended the MIT Co-Ed Invitational and Boston University's St. Valentine Invitational. At MIT, four Red Dragons collected individual wins. Sophomore Jeremy Cline won the triple jump in an ECAC qualifying and personal best leap of 13.17 meters. Classmate Nick Scalfone picked up his first collegiate win in taking the 5,000 meters in a school record and SUNYAC qualifying time of 15:54.52. Senior Taylor Arnold won the weight throw with a heave of 14.84 meters. Fellow senior Shaun Hurley won the high jump with a clearance of 1.90 meters. From there, Hurley headed over to BU for his triple jump competition. He proceeded to take 5th place at the Division I meet with a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 14.32 meters, which is 46 feet - 11 3/4 inches. He beat his previous best by exactly 1 foot. Simultaneously on the track, a trio of sprinters each won their respective heats and hit the NCAA provisional standard in the 400 meters. Senior Tom O'Neill took 12th overall in a school record time of 48.94 seconds. Juniors Scott Pollard and Art Driscoll placed 16th and 17th, respectively, in times of 49.18 and 49.22. All three times beat the previous school record of 50.56 set by Driscoll back in December. Freshman Tim Moran came into his own today as he was the only Red Dragon to claim victory. He won the 55 meter hurdles in a school record time of 8.15. He also placed 5th in the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying mark of 13.19 meters. Senior Tom O'Neill took 2nd in both the 55 and 200 meters. His time of 22.40 in the 200 broke his own school record. O'Neill also placed 4th in the long jump with a leap of 6.31 meters. Senior Shaun Hurley also took 2nd in his 2 events. He jumped 1.92 meters in the high jump and 13.43 meters in the triple jump. Senior Shaun Hurley won the triple jump, placed 3rd in the high jump, and 4th in the long jump. In all 3 events, he reached the ECAC qualifying standard. In the triple jump, freshman Tim Moran hit the ECAC mark in placing 4th with a leap of 13.16 meters. Junior Adam Remillard placed 5th in the long jump and 6th in the triple with leaps of 6.52 meters and 12.95 meters, respectively. His long jump was good enough for ECAC qualification. Taylor Arnold took 4th place in the weight throw with a heave of 14.74 meters. In the sprints, senior Tom O'Neill placed 3rd in the 55 and 4th in the 200 in ECAC qualifying times of 6.54 and 22.53, respectively. Junior Art Driscoll placed 5th in the 200 with his own ECAC qualifying time of 22.64. SUNYAC standards were hit in the distance races, as well. He picked wins in the long and triple jumps and placed 2nd in the high jump to total 28 points. His leap of 6.55 meters in the long jump qualified him for ECAC's, which will be held back at St. Lawrence the first weekend in March. Junior Ryan Wells also qualified for ECAC's, as he placed 2nd in the 1,000 meters in a school record time of 3:35.12. In the sprints, junior Aundrae Dair and senior Tim Wood both improved their SUNYAC marks in the 55, while Wood qualified in the 200. Junior Art Driscoll placed 8th in the 200 meters in an ECAC and SUNYAC qualifying time of 22.52. He also placed 13th in the 400 with a time of 50.90. Junior Aundrae Dair hit the SUNYAC standards in both the 60 (7.22) and 200 (23.09) while placing 15th and 17th, respectively. Classmate Justin Palermo also hit the 200 standard with a 39th place finish in 23.94. Junior transfer Ryan Wells had an immediate impact in his first race as a Red Dragon. He placed 20th in the 800 in a SUNYAC qualifying time of 2:02.29. In the jumps, junior Adam Remillard placed 7th in the long jump with a leap of 6.45 meters, falling 3cm short of ECAC's. "Mike Schmidt (Associate Coach) has done a heck of a job," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "We have a ton of qualifiers already for SUNYAC's and a couple for NCAA's. The program is at an all new level because of Mike." Senior Shaun Hurley is one of the guys who jumped his way to an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in winning the triple jump. His leap of 14.01 meters (45' 11 3/4") eclipsed the NCAA standard of 14.00 meters and set a new school record. Hurley also added a victory in the high jump (1.90 meters) and a 4th in the long jump (6.10 meters). Both marks were good enough for SUNYAC qualifying. Classmate Tom O'Neill continues to chase an NCAA berth. He won the 55 meters in 6.54 seconds. His time in the semi's (6.53) set a new school record and missed the provisional mark by .03. He added a 3rd place in the 400 meters in a SUNYAC qualifying time of 50.90. He teamed with juniors Art Driscoll and Justin Palermo and classmate Tim Wood to set a new school and meet record in the 4x200 meter relay with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:32.11. Driscoll won the 400 earlier in the day in a school record and ECAC time of 50.56. He broke his own school record which was set last February at the Armory in New York City. Senior Tom O'Neill led the way by placing 3rd in the 60 meter dash and 2nd in the 200 meters. His times of 7.02 (60) and 22.41 (200) qualified him for both SUNYAC's and ECAC's. His time in the 60 missed the NCAA Provisional mark by .04 and his 200 time set a new school record. Junior Art Driscoll tied for 8th in the 60 with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 7.24 and placed 3rd in the 200 with a time of 22.63, which hit both the SUNYAC and ECAC marks. Senior Shaun Hurley also narrowly missed the NCAA Provisional mark in the triple jump. He leaped 13.97 meters, missing the NCAA mark by 3cm. However, his jump did qualify him for SUNYAC's and ECAC's and set a new school record.
