Oneonta State Track & Field Athletes earned major national scholar-athlete honors from the national coaches’ association when the individual and team All-Academic teams were announced last week.  The Men's Track & Field Team earned the National All-Academic Team Honor by compiling a 3.02 GPA, above the 3.0 needed for the honor.  The team was among only 31 teams nationally to be given the honor.  The full men’s article can be found at http://ustfccca.cstv.com/sports/division3/spec-rel/072006aaa.html.


ECAC Championships @ Springfield College - Thursday-Friday, May 18-19, 2006

The Red Dragons placed 22nd overall with 13 points.  The 4x400 meter relay team of juniors Adam Remillard and Scott Pollard and freshmen Joe Reed and Eric Theiss broke their own school record and placed 2nd in a time of 3:18.24.  Remillard led-off in 52.5 with Pollard following in 48.6.  Reed ran a blistering 48.1, while Theiss anchored the quartet home in 48.9.  The previous school record of 3:19.30 was set last week in New York City's Icahn Stadium.  Earlier in the day, Reed and Pollard placed 6th and 7th, respectively in the 200 meters with times of 22.19 and 22.26.

Villanova Tuppeny Twilight Meet - Monday, May 15, 2006

Freshman Joe Reed improved his ECAC qualifying time in the 200 meters, taking home the victory at the highly competitive DI meet.  His time of 21.95 bettered his personal best by 1 tenth of a second.  He also placed 7th in the 100 meters in a time of 11.07.  Junior Scott Pollard placed 2nd in the 400 meters in an NCAA provisional time of 48.42.  He also took home 4th in the 200 meters in a time of 22.13.  Junior Jeremy Cline placed 11th in the javelin with a toss of 46.58 meters.  Senior Ryan Walter ended his Red Dragon career, narrowly missing his own school record in the 5,000 meters.  His time of 15:42.65 placed him 20th.  Reed and Pollard will be joined by juniors Adam Remillard and Matt Durkin and freshman Eric Theiss for competition at the ECAC Championships Thursday and Friday at Springfield College.

NYC Qualifying Challenge @ Icahn Stadium - Saturday, May 13, 2006

Junior Scott Pollard had a hand in two school records on the day for the Red Dragons who headed to NYC's Icahn Stadium, looking to run fast on the IAAF certified facility.  Pollard placed 4th in the 400 meters in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 48.30, which broke his own school record of 48.41 set at the SUNYAC Championships on April 29th.  He also teamed with junior Adam Remillard and freshmen Joe Reed and Eric Theiss to place 4th in the 4x400 relay in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 3:19.30.  The previous school record was held by Kwame White, Tom O'Neill, Tim Wood, and Art Driscoll and was set on May 15th, 2004 at the ECAC Championships at Williams College.

SUNYAC Championships @ Brockport - Friday-Saturday, April 28-29, 2006

The Red Dragons placed 5th in the team competition with 64 points.  Freshman Joe Reed led the way in winning both the 100 and 200 meters in times of 11.18 and 22.17, respectively.  In the Friday semi-finals of the 100, he ran 10.79 seconds to provisionally qualify for NCAA's.  His time in the 200 meters, hit the ECAC standard.  Junior Scott Pollard won the 400 meters in an impressive time of 48.41 seconds, which broke All-American Tom O'Neill's school record and hit the NCAA provisional time.  He also placed 3rd in the 200 meters with a time of 22.46.  Pollard and Reed teamed with freshman Eric Thiess and junior Adam Remillard to place 2nd in the 4x400 relay in an ECAC time of 3:20.91.  Theiss placed 6th and 7th respectively, in the 400 and 200 meters with ECAC qualifying times of 49.50 and 22.50.  His time in the 400, beat the winner's time from 2005.  Juniors Matt Durkin and Jeremy Cline came through with clutch performances, as well.  Durkin ran a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 9:43.33 in the steeplechase to place 3rd and pick up a medal.  He beat Ryan Wells' school record of 9:52.49, set last year at SUNYAC's.  Cline picked up a medal, as well.  He placed 3rd in the javelin with a personal best throw of 47.67 meters.  Freshman Rich Kardas placed 7th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.56 (16.37 in semi), while senior Justin Palermo placed 8th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.40 (58.27 in semi).  Freshman Aaron Payne set the school record in the pole vault with a leap of 3.70 meters (12' 1.5"), finishing just out of scoring in 9th place.

Soka University Twilight Meet - Saturday, April 15, 2006

The Red Dragons flew west in search of warm weather and hot competition during spring break and came home with 4 ECAC qualifiers.  Senior Ryan Walter and freshman Marty Nicholson started the weekend off in the 10,000 meters at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational with SUNYAC qualifying times of 33:26.36 and 34:15.69, respectively.  Junior Matt Durkin had a big weekend, running 2 personal bests.  On Friday, he ran 9:59.68 for the 3,000 meter steeplechase, good for 22nd place.  On Saturday, at the Soka Twilight Meet, he ran 4:06.11 for 1,500 meters in placing 5th.  Both times were SUNYAC qualifying times.  On the sprint side, the Red Dragons won the 100, 200, and 400 meters.  Freshman Joe Reed won the 100 in an ECAC time of 11.05.  He also placed 2nd in the 200 in another ECAC time of 22.05.  Junior Scott Pollard won the 200 in a time of 21.95.  Senior Ryan Wells returned to the track after injury and won the 400 meters in a track record time of 53.98.  Junior Adam Remillard placed 6th in the 100 meters in a SUNYAC time of 11.72.  The quartet teamed together to place 2nd in the 4x100 relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 43.87.

Richard Stockton College Osprey Open - Saturday, April 8, 2006

The Red Dragons opened the 2006 outdoor season in the cold, wind, and rain in southern New Jersey.  They managed a few SUNYAC qualifiers in the abbreviated meet, due the declining weather conditions.  Junior Jeremy Cline placed 5th in the javelin with a toss of 44.70 meters, which was a personal best and a SUNYAC qualifying mark.  Freshman Rich Kardas also placed 5th in his event.  His time 17.19 in the 110 high hurdles hit the SUNYAC standard, as well.  The team travels to southern California this week to compete in meets on Friday and Saturday.

The Red Dragons finished in a tie for 21st out of 44 scoring teams with 11 points.  Junior Matt Durkin came within meters of being the first male ECAC Champion for O-State, but was nipped at the line in the 1000 meters.  He led 99% of the race and finished in a time of 2:35.48, 8 hundredths of second behind the winner.  Senior Scott Pollard placed 6th in the 400 meters with a time of 50.11 to round out the scoring.

New Balance NYU Fastrack Invitational - Friday, February 24, 2006

The Red Dragons traveled to New York's famed Armory and the 4x400 meter relay team of freshmen Joe Reed and Eric Theiss and junior Adam Remillard and senior Scott Pollard hit the NCAA provisional mark with a time of 3:19.68.  The quartet placed 5th overall.  Junior Matt Durkin ran a huge 5 second personal best in blowing away the rest of his heat in the 1,000 meters.  His time of 2:34.42 broke teammate Ryan Wells' school record of 2:35.12 set last year at St. Lawrence, qualified him for next week's ECAC Championship, and placed him 16th overall.  Classmate Nick Scalfone followed suit in the 3,000 meters.  He broke his own school record in running 8:53.39 and improving his ECAC qualifying time by 4 seconds.

SUNYAC Championships @ Hobart/William Smith Colleges - Saturday, February 18, 2006

The Red Dragons placed 5th with 67 points and picked up 2 individual titles and 1 relay crown.  Senior Scott Pollard successfully defended his 2005 SUNYAC crown in the 400 meters.  His time of 49.52 was an NCAA provisional mark and missed the meet record by 2 hundredths of a second.  He also anchored the 4x400 meter relay to the victory and meet record for the 2nd year in a row.  The quartet of freshmen Joe Reed and Eric Theiss and junior Adam Remillard crossed the line in 3:22.84 just ahead of rivals Cortland and Plattsburgh in easily the meet's most exciting race of the day.  Reed picked up the other SUNYAC title on the day for O-State.  His time of 22.69 in the 200 meters outdistanced teammate Theiss and hit the ECAC qualifying standard.  Theiss' time of 22.88 was a huge personal best and also an ECAC qualifying time.  Reed also placed 2nd in the 55 with an NCAA provisional time of 6.47.  Theiss was 8th in the same event with a time of 6.81.  He also placed 4th in the 400 meters with a time of 50.95.  Senior Justin Palermo picked up the 8th place finish in the 200 in a time of 23.54.  He teamed with classmate Ryan Walter and juniors Matt Durkin and Rick DeCarr to place 3rd in the distance medley relay in a school record time of 10:47.62.  Walter, Durkin, and DeCarr teamed with junior Nick Scalfone to place 8th in the 4x800, as well.  Scalfone placed 6th in the 3000 meter in a great battle.  His time of 8:57.71 hit the ECAC mark and barely missed his own school record by 1 hundredth of a second.  Classmate Jeremy Cline placed 5th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.16 meters to hit the ECAC standard.

MIT Co-Ed Invitational - Saturday, February 11, 2006

Senior Justin Palermo took the title as sprints king at MIT.  He won both the 55 and 200 in SUNYAC qualifying times of 6.87 and 23.58, respectively.  Junior Jeremy Cline returned from injury and promptly triple jumped his way to a new personal best.  His leap of 44' 7 1/2" qualified him for ECAC's.  Junior Nick Scalfone picked up the win in the 5000 in a SUNYAC time of 15:58.64.  Senior Ryan Walter placed 2nd in the 3000 in a SUNYAC time of 9:10.75.  Classmate Kyle Dresser returned to form in the shot put, tossing the 16 pound ball 40' 9 3/4", hitting the SUNYAC mark.  Junior Matt Durkin broke the school record in the 600 meters.  His time of 1:29.12 placed him 6th.

Boston University St. Valentine's Invitational - Saturday, February 11, 2006

A plethora of ECAC standards were hit on Boston U's banked oval on Saturday.  The 4x400 relay team of freshmen Joe Reed and Eric Theiss, junior Adam Remillard, and senior Scott Pollard shocked SUNYAC foes Cortland and Brockport in running 3:20.85, narrowly missing the NCAA provisional mark.  The time was nine seconds faster than the quartet's time last week at Syracuse and it hit the ECAC standard, as well.  Earlier in the day, Reed placed 16th in the 55 and 41st in the 200 in ECAC times of 6.58 and 22.70, respectively.  Pollard placed 28th in the 400 in an ECAC time of 49.86 with Theiss hitting the ECAC mark in the same event.  His time of 50.72 placed him 58th.  Remillard placed 22nd in the long jump with an ECAC mark of 21' 7 1/4".

Oneonta State traveled to Manley Field House and came home with another NCAA qualifying mark.  Senior Scott Pollard improved his 400 time for NCAA's in winning the event in a time of 49.19.  He also teamed with freshmen Joe Reed and Eric Theiss and junior Adam Remillard to take 3rd place in the 4x400 relay in a SUNYAC qualifying time of 3:29.01.  Reed took 3rd in the 60 dash and 5th in the 200 with ECAC qualifying times of 6.99 and 22.94, respectively.  Junior Nick Scalfone placed 3rd in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:41.21, narrowing missing his own school record.

The Red Dragons placed 8th out of 10 teams with 29 points.  Junior Nick Scalfone broke Brian Suozzo's school record in the 3,000 meters that was set in February 2002 at Cornell.  Scalfone's time of 8:57.70 nipped Suozzo's by less than a second and qualified him for ECAC's.  Junior Adam Remillard picked up the win in the long jump.  On his last attempt, he out leaped the 2nd place finisher by 1 cm.  Freshman Joe Reed placed 2nd in the 55 dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 6.54.

The Red Dragons opened up 2006 in New York’s North Country and placed 3rd in the team standings with 60 points.  Senior Scott Pollard won the 500 meters in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 1:06.91.  Junior Adam Remillard took two victories on the day in jumping SUNYAC qualifying marks in both the long and triple jumps with leaps of 6.41 and 12.61 meters, respectively.  Freshman Eric Theiss took 2nd in the 200 meters with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 23.42.

Saints Holiday Relays @ St. Lawrence University – Saturday, December 10, 2005

The Red Dragons finished off 2005 in a jolly way at the Saints Holiday Relays.  Senior Scott Pollard and freshman Joe Reed each hit NCAA Provisional standards in their respective events.  Pollard took home the win the 400 meters in a time of 49.23, while Reed won the 55 dash in 6.46.  Reed’s time broke All-American Tom O’Neill’s school record of 6.53 set last year.  Reed also teamed with classmates Eric Theiss and Rich Kardas and senior Justin Palermo to win the 4x200 meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:35.33.  Theiss made major contributions, as well.  He placed 3rd in the 55 dash and 6th in the 400 with SUNYAC qualifying times of 6.74 and 52.43, respectively.  Kardas took 2nd in the 55 hurdles in a SUNYAC time of 8.47 seconds.  Classmates Mike DeVasto and Aaron Payne made impacts, as well. DeVasto debuted in the shot put and proceeded to throw a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying heave of 12.61 meters to finish 4th.  Payne took 2nd in the pole vault with a school record vault of 3.65 meters.  Junior Adam Remillard took two 2nd place finishes on the day in jumping SUNYAC qualifying marks in both the long and triple jumps with leaps of 6.54 and 12.74 meters, respectively.

Cornell Relays – Saturday, December 3, 2005


Oneonta State jumped into the 2005-2006 indoor season with two school records and an ECAC qualifier.  Senior Scott Pollard blew away the field and the school record in the 300 meters in a blazing time of 34.97 seconds in taking the victory.  Chris Smith held the previous record of 36.92 set at Cornell three years ago in December.  Junior Adam Remillard placed 4th in the long jump with a leap of 6.81 meters (22’ 4 Ό”), which qualified him for ECAC’s.  In the triple jump, he leaped 13.00 meters (42’ 8”).  His marks in both events were indoor personal bests.  Freshman Rich Kardas set the school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.23 in the semi-finals, which also qualified him for SUNYAC’s.  His time of 9.36 in the final placed him 15th
