NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships @ Letchworth State Park (Geneseo) – Saturday, November 11, 2006

Oneonta State placed 18^th out of 34 complete teams with 492 points.  Senior Nick Scalfone ended his XC career with a solid race, placing 56^th in a time of 27:09 over the 8,000 meter course.  Junior Alex Grout was next in 72^nd place with a time of 27:35.  Freshman Nick Pampena also ran a solid race in 113^th (28:22).  Sophomore Marty Nicholson finished 126^th with a time of 28:45.  Seniors Matt Durkin and Rick DeCarr ended their O-State XC careers with 130^th and 136^th place finishes respectively, in times of 28:53 and 29:04.

ECAC Championships @ Mt. Greylock H.S. (Williams College) – Saturday, November 4, 2006

Oneonta State placed 4^th out of 40 teams with 144 points, 18 points out of a top 3 finish.  Senior Ryan Wells returned to form and placed 10^th overall to earn All-ECAC honors for the 2^nd straight year.  He finished the rolling 8,000 meter course in a season best time of 26:42.  Junior Alex Grout was next in 17^th place in a time of 27:02, two places out of All-ECAC honors.  Sophomore Marty Nicholson placed 33^rd in a time of 27:25.  Seniors Matt Durkin and Nick Scalfone finished the scoring in 41^st and 43^rd respectively, in times of 27:38 and 27:40.  Freshman Nick Pampena placed 57^th in a personal best time of 27:56 with senior Rick DeCarr finishing 94^th in 28:39.

SUNYAC Championships @ Beaver Island State Park – Saturday, October 21, 2006

The Red Dragons placed 7^th out of 11 teams with 165 points.  Senior Nick Scalfone led the way in 26^th place with a time of 24:56 over the incredibly short and sloppy 8,000 meter course.  Junior Alex Grout was next in 37^th place with sophomore Marty Nicholson right behind in 38^th.  Grout and Nicholson ran 25:34 and 25:38, respectively.  Senior Ryan Wells battled illness all week to finish 52^nd in a time of 26:14.  Classmate Rick DeCarr turned in a great race in the 5^th scoring role in placing 56^th with a time of 26:21.  Freshman Nick Pampena was 60^th in a time of 26:28.  Senior Matt Durkin was 7^th for the team in 70^th place, running the last 4 miles without his left shoe, which was lost in the mud.

The Red Dragons placed 2^nd out of 11 teams with 63 points.  Seniors Ryan Wells, Matt Durkin, and Nick Scalfone led the way in finishing 8^th, 9^th, and 12^th respectively, in times of 27:32, 27:39, and 27:51 over the very sloppy 8K course.  Junior Alex Grout was next in placing 15^th with a time of 28:11.  Sophomore Marty Nicholson and freshman Nick Pampena closed well in the last 800 meters to help hold off Hamilton College.  Nicholson placed 20^th with a time of 28:19 and Pampena placed 23^rd in 28:24, good enough for a personal best in his young career.

Oneonta State placed 2^nd out of 4 teams with 33 points.  Senior Matt Durkin led the way for the second time this season in placing 3^rd with a time of 17:32 over the challenging 5,000 meter Delhi College Golf Course.  He was followed by classmate Nick Scalfone in 5^th place in 17:47 with sophomore Marty Nicholson right behind in 6^th with a time of 17:51.  Senior Rick DeCarr was 9th in 18:19 with freshmen Nick Pampena and Travis Visco placing 11^th and 16^th, respectively in times of 18:23 and 19:42.

Oneonta State placed 8^th out of 25 teams with 232 points in the enormous Open race.  Junior Alex Grout led the way for the first time this season in placing 119^th with a time of 26:56.  The next four Red Dragons finished within 30 seconds of Grout.  Seniors Nick Scalfone and Ryan Wells placed 143^rd and 147^th in times of 27:03 and 27:04, respectively.  Scalfone’s time was a personal best by 7 seconds.  Sophomore Marty Nicholson was next in 187^th with a time of 27:21.  Senior Matt Durkin finished the scoring for O-State in 194^th with a time of 27:26.

The Red Dragons had a solid showing, placing 3rd out of 9 teams with 101 points, 2 back of Ithaca College.  Senior Ryan Wells was the top finisher for O-State in 13th place with a time of 20:29.  Classmate Nick Scalfone was next in 16th place with a time of 20:42 over the 6,000 meter Fortin Park course.  Junior transfer Alex Grout had his best race thus far in an Oneonta uniform, moving up the entire race to place 19th in 20:58.  Senior Matt Durkin was right behind in 20th place (20:59) with sophomore Marty Nicholson completing the scoring in 43rd place with a time of 21:31.

Oneonta State dominated their cross town rival, Hartwick College, in posting a 17-42 victory on the day.  Red Dragons took the top 4 spots with senior Nick Scalfone winning the 5K in a time of 16:01.4.  His classmates Matt Durkin and Ryan Wells came in together with times of 16:18.3 and 16:19.3, good for 2nd and 3rd.  Junior Alex Grout was 4th in a time of 16:29.6.  Sophomore Marty Nicholson was the last scoring runner in 7th place with a time of 16:49.0.

Oneonta State Early Bird Invitational @ Fortin Park – Saturday, September 2, 2006

Oneonta State kicked off the 2006 season in style by winning the team title with 30 points, outdistancing Plattsburgh by 9 points.  Senior Matt Durkin led the charge, placing third in a time of 20:34.  Classmate Nick Scalfone was fourth in 20:58.  Junior transfer Alex Grout was ninth for O-State in a time of 21:19, with senior Ryan Wells one second behind in tenth.  Sophomore Marty Nicholson was twelfth in a time of 21:24 to finish the scoring for the Red Dragons.  “This is the best start we have ever had to a season,” said head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “The guys did their homework over the summer and raced intelligently today.”
