NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS @ ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY - THURSDAY, MAY 22, 2003 Kelly Stevens completed a magical 1st official NCAA season for Oneonta State track & field by placing 8th in her heat and 15th overall in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Championships. She came into the meet as the 19th seed. Her time of 4:44.84 moved her up 4 spots, just missing the finals. "I am extremely proud of Kelly and what she has accomplished," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "She has learned a lot from her experience here and has set a standard for excellence that she and other athletes in the program will duplicate and exceed in the future."
Stevens makes it to NCAA's!
ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ MIT - FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2003 6 races, 6 school records, 6
personal bests, and 1 NCAA provisional qualifier sums up the Red Dragons'
efforts at the ECAC Championships. They placed 25th overall out of 47
schools with 10.5 total points. Kelly Stevens got the day started by
winning her heat in the 1,500 meters and placing 6th overall. Stevens
took control of the race with 700 meters remaining and never looked back.
She crossed the line in 4:41.86 and became the first individual woman to hit
an NCAA standard in school history. Stevens will have to wait until
Monday to see if she high enough on the
NCAA
performance list to get into the championships. Ashlee Robertson was next for
O-State. She won her heat in the 400 and placed 6th overall in a
school record time of :58.76. She came back later in the day and
placed 7th overall in the 200 with a school record time of :25.83. It
was the first time ever in either event that Robertson has been under 59 and
26 seconds, respectively. Jen Macri broke her own school record
placing 8th with a time of 2:17.47 in the 800 meters. Rose Velan
stepped on the track after Macri and also broke her own school record in the 400
hurdles with a time of 1:08.81. The foursome then teamed to place 7th
overall in the 4x400 meter relay in a new school record time of 4:02.14.
They knocked 4 seconds off the previous mark which was set when they won the SUNYAC Championship on April 26th. "This has been a heck of a year for
these ladies," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "To finish in this
manner is a rare and special occurrence."
UNIVERSITY @ ALBANY SPRING CLASSIC - SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2003 Oneonta State placed an
impressive 5th out of 20 teams with 45 points. Leading the way were
ECAC qualifiers Ashlee Robertson and Jen Macri. Robertson broke both
her own school records in placing 3rd in both the 200 and 400 meters with
times of :26.02 and :59.65, respectively. Macri broke the school
record in placing 3rd in the 800 meters with over a 3 second personal best
time of 2:17.93. All three performances improved ECAC qualifying marks
from earlier in the season. Maria Compson and Abby McQueeney Penamonte
dueled in the late stages of the 10,000 meters and finished 1-2,
respectively, with times of 45:24.14 and 45:27.46. Jessica Tylutki
finished her first season of throwing the javelin with a school record throw
of 23.82 meters (78' 1 3/4").
ONEONTA STATE MAY MEET - SATURDAY, MAY 3, 2003 Ashlee Robertson set a meet,
facility, and school record in winning the 200 meters and qualifying for the
ECAC Championships in a time of :26.16. On the day, the Red Dragons
won 7 events and set 5 school records.
SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ DIETZ STADIUM (NEW PALTZ) - SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2003 The women's 4x400 meter relay
sprinted their way to the SUNYAC Championship and ended a solid showing at
their 1st ever Outdoor Championship. The foursome of Rose Velan, Jen
Macri, Kelly Stevens, and Ashlee Robertson edged Cortland for the title in a
school record and ECAC qualifying time of 4:06.18. The previous school
record was set one year ago to the day at Penn Relays. The Red Dragons
placed 8th overall with 25 points. Macri, Velan, and Robertson teamed
with Erin Putnam to start the scoring for the day. The foursome placed
6th in the 4x100 meter relay in a school record time of :52.63. Then,
Stevens hit the track and placed 3rd in the 1,500 meters in a school record
and ECAC qualifying time of 4:46.26. Robertson also placed 3rd in her
individual event. She crossed the line in the 400 meters in an ECAC
qualifying time of 1:00.22. Velan also got in the act by placing 5th
in the 400 hurdles in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 1:10.13.
"The weather was not conducive to running fast, but we did. I am
excited to see what we can do when it's not 50 degrees and rain,"
commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "All the kids ran tough. I
am truly proud of them."
HARTWICK COLLEGE INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 2003 Oneonta State co-hosted the
Hartwick College Invitational with all but the throwing events at the Red
Dragon's All College Field. The Red Dragons placed 2nd with 107
points. Kelly Stevens and Jen Macri led the way by going 1-2 in the
800 meters. Both women hit the ECAC standard with times of 2:19.52 and
2:21.17, respectively. Rose Velan hit the SUNYAC standard in winning
the 400 intermediate hurdles in a time of 1:10.76. It was Velan's
first time running that event. Abby McQueeney Penamonte won the 5,000
in a time of 22:15.71.
ITHACA COLLEGE OPEN INVITATIONAL - THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2003 The Red Dragons used the Ithaca Open as a tune-up for the Hartwick Invite this weekend at home. No new qualifying standards were met.
UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER ALUMNI INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2003 Oneonta State placed 14th with
13 points. Ashlee Robertson came back from injury to qualify for
ECAC's in the 100 and 200. Jen Macri also qualified for ECAC's.
In her first ever 1500 meter race, she placed 10th in a time of 4:54.67.
DICK SHEA OPEN @ WEST POINT - SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2003 The Red Dragons opened up their
2003 outdoor season with a non-scoring meet at Army. They were led by
junior Kelly Stevens who qualified for ECAC's in both the 800 and 1500
meters. She started the day by placing 2nd in the 1500 with a new
personal best time of 4:49.19. She came back less than 2 hours later
to win the 800 in a time of 2:21.84. She also anchored a 1600 meter
relay team which placed 6th in a time of 4:43.62.

ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ TUFTS UNIVERSITY - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MARCH 7-8, 2003
On Friday night, the distance medley relay team of
juniors Rose Velan and Kelly Stevens, and sophomores Ashlee Robertson and
Jen Macri placed 7th out of 21 teams at the ECAC Championships with an
NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12:18.51. The foursome easily
hit the standard of 12:25.00 and bettered their own school record of
12:26.19 set last week. This is the first ever NCAA qualifying
performance in the history of Oneonta State Women's Track & Field.
The impressive part is that they did it in their first ever year of NCAA
competition. Velan led off the relay in the 1200 meter leg with a
split of 3:50.7 and then handed to Robertson, who blasted her 400 meter
leg in 58.4 seconds. Next was Macri, who ran her 800 split in 2:23.6
and handed to Stevens, who ran an outstanding 5:05.5 1600 meter split to
finish, moving
from 10th to 7th. "I
am extremely proud of what these women have accomplished in such a short
time," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "It is a great day for
the program and it signals the start of something great." The women
ran their individual events, as well as the 4x400 meter relay on
Saturday afternoon. Ashlee Robertson placed 13th in the 400 meters
in a time of 1:00.06. Rose Velan and Jen Macri placed 9th and 11th,
respectively in the 500 meters with times of 1:21.48 and 1:22.02.
Kelly Stevens broke another school record (3 for the weekend) in the 800
meters. She placed 15th in a time of 2:20.17. The quartet
finished the day with a win in their heat of the 1600 meter relay with a
new school record time of 4:07.18. They placed 13th overall,
knocking more than 2.5 seconds off their previous school record.
The official entries for this weekend’s NCAA Championships have been posted on http://www.raceberryjam.com/NCWMNENT.HTM. They took the top 9 teams in the country, all of which hit the automatic qualifying standard. Oneonta State’s time of 12:18.51 ranked them 19th, so they will not be going. However, Coach LoPiccolo made a statement, "I am extremely happy with that for our first year. But, I am not satisfied. We can go a long ways here. I am looking forward to it. Right now, congratulations are in order for the ladies. Great job!"
NYU FASTRACK INVITATIONAL @ NY ARMORY - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2003
The Red Dragons won the Distance Medley Relay
in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 12:26.19. They
narrowly missed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 12:23.80.
Junior Rose Velan led off the relay in the 1200 leg in 3:53.7 and handed
to sophomore Ashlee Roberston tied for the lead. Robertson
immediately assumed control of the race in the 400 meter leg (59.0 split)
and handed to sophomore Jen Macri for the 800 stint. Macri
maintained the lead while running 2:23.5 and handed to junior Kelly
Stevens for the final 1600 meters. Stevens dueled with the Cortland
anchor leg before taking the lead for good with 450 meters to go.
She split 5:09.7 for her leg, which was just shy of a mile. Stevens
and Velan came back later in the day to place 10th and 17th in 800 meters
in times of 2:20.77 and 2:25.42, respectively. Robertson placed 22nd
in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.19.
SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ HOBART/WILLIAM SMITH - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2003
The Red Dragons accumulated 23 points in
placing seventh overall, just three points out of sixth as they were led
by juniors Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Rose Velan
(Stamford, NY/Chazy Central) and sophomore Ashlee Robertson
(Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa). All three earned SUNYAC medals in
their individual events, as well as earning a medal in the 4x400 relay.
Velan placed third in the 500-meter run in a time of 1:20.80 to earn her
individual medal. Stevens earned her medal in the 1,000-meter run
with a third place finish in a time of 3:01.42. Both bettered their
own school records and improved their times for the ECAC Championship in
two weeks. Robertson earned two individual medals after finishing
fifth in the 400 in a time of 1:00.68 and sixth in the 200 with a time of
26.71. This trio then added freshman Erin Putnam (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca)
to run a time of 4:11.41 in the 4x400 relay and place 3rd. Putnam
joined sophomore Carol Tichio and freshmen Stephanie Profenna and Maria
Compson to place 5th earlier in the day in the Distance Medley Relay in a
time of 14:42.86.
TUFTS UNIVERSITY STAMPEDE - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2003 In their final preparation
prior to the SUNYAC Championship meet next weekend, the Oneonta State
women’s indoor track & field teams competed at the Tufts University
Stampede. Although the meet was a non-scoring situation, the team
had more athletes hit conference and ECAC qualifying times in the meet.
Junior Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) was the top
finisher on the day with a win in the 1,500 meters with an ECAC and SUNYAC
qualifying time of 4:51.73. Classmate Rose Velan (Stamford, NY/Chazy
Central) and sophomore Ashlee Robertson (Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa)
both hit ECAC and SUNYAC standards in their individual events. Velan
finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.00 while Robertson
placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 59.79. The three were
also a part of the 4x400-meter relay that placed second, as well.
Freshman Erin Putnam (Ithaca, NY/Lansing) joined the trio to run a time of
4:11.04. Other SUNYAC qualifiers include senior Stacy Lehman
(Penfield, NY/Penfield) in the 55-meter hurdles. Junior Abby
McQueeney-Penamonte (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) qualified in both the
5,000-meter run and the pole vault. Erin Putnam also hit the
standard in the 400-meter dash while classmate Julie Joyce (Nanuet,
NY/Nanuet) qualified in the pole vault.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL
- SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2003
DICK DESHRIVER INVITATIONAL @ EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2003
Three Red Dragons hit ECAC standards in the
large non-scoring meet. Sophomore Ashlee Robertson placed 2nd in the
200 meters in a time of :26.57, a new personal best and school record by 4
tenths of a second. She also anchored the 1600 meter relay with a
split of :60.0 in winning the heat and placing 7th overall in a new ECAC
qualifying time of 4:09.95. Junior Kelly Stevens ran 3rd leg on the
relay and also placed 2nd in her individual event. She hit the ECAC
standard in the 1000 meters in a personal best and school record time of
3:03.81. Sophomore Jen Macri qualified for ECAC's in placing 5th in
the 500 meters in a time of 1:23.01. She also ran 2nd leg on the
4x400 relay. Junior Rose Velan joined the trio in leading off the
relay. She also qualified for SUNYAC's in the 800 meters in a time
of 2:29.76. Rounding out the qualifying for Oneonta State was
freshman Maria Compson. She 14th in the 3000 meters in a school
record time of 11:37.77
ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2003
The Red Dragons placed 6th out of 9 teams with
41.5 points, but more importantly, had a plethora of SUNYAC Qualifiers.
Junior Kelly Stevens had a tremendous day in qualifying for not only for
SUNYAC's but for ECAC's in 2 events. Stevens started the day off
placing 3rd in the 800 meters in a personal best time of 2:20.38. She
came back and ran the 3rd leg of the 4x400 meter relay with a split of
61.8. The team, which also included sophomores Ashlee Robertson and
Jen Macri, and junior Rose Velan, finished second in a new school record
time of 4:10.12. "Kelly continues to improve at a
surprising rate," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "It is really
great to see and be a part of." Robertson, Velan, and Macri also
qualified for SUNYAC's in their individual events with Robertson placing
4th in the 55 and 2nd in the 200 meters, and Velan and Macri placing 6th
and 7th in the 400 meters, respectively. Sophomore Kristin
Miltenberg had a good day in the shot put circle, with a SUNYAC qualifying
throw and personal best of 10.32m (33' 10 1/4").
UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER INVITATIONAL - SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 2003 The Red Dragons placed 3rd out
of 6 teams with 70 points. The lone Dragon to win was junior Kelly
Stevens who took the 800 meters in convincing fashion in a SUNYAC
qualifying time of 2:31.35. Stevens ran her last 200 meters in 33.8
seconds to win by 6 seconds. Also hitting the SUNYAC standard was
junior Rose Velan who placed 2nd in the 500 meters in a time of 1:23.88,
senior Stacy Lehmann who placed 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of
:10.41, sophomore Ashlee Robertson who placed 3rd in both the 55 and 200
meters, respectively in a times of :07.69 and :28.47, and freshman Amanda
Preston who placed 4th in the 55 meters in a time of :08.04.
DARTMOUTH COLLEGE RELAYS - SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 2003 Oneonta State opened up 2003
with 3 school records and SUNYAC qualifying performances. Freshman
Holly Cooper improved her personal best by 3 feet with a throw of 10.17
meters (33' 4 1/2") in placing 33rd in the 20 pound Weight Throw.
Sophomore Ashlee Robertson placed 22nd in the 55 meters with a time of
:07.69. She also teamed with sophomore Jen Macri, and juniors Kelly
Stevens and Rose Velan in placing 8th in the 1600 meter relay in a time of
4:13.45. They knocked 4 seconds off the school record and are
currently leading the SUNYAC in the event. "I am extremely excited
with the way we performed after a month of winter break," commented
head coach Matt LoPiccolo. "I look forward to seeing what we can do
in a month or two."
CORNELL UNIVERSITY RELAYS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2002 The Red
Dragons opened up the 2003 season with school records and SUNYAC
qualifiers at the Cornell University Relays. Sophomore captain
Ashlee Robertson led the way by placing 17th in the 60 meters with a time
of :08.28 and 11th in the 300 meters in a time of :43.40. Both
performances set school records and qualified her for the SUNYAC
Championship to be held on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at Hobart/William
Smith. On the day for Oneonta State, 5 school records were set in 7
different SUNYAC qualifying performances.
