NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS @ MILLIKIN UNIVERSITY - THURSDAY-SATURDAY, MAY 27-29, 2004
Junior Ashlee Robertson missed the finals of the 400-meters by one-hundredth of a second at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., on Friday.  The top eight in each event advanced to the finals.  Robertson finished ninth.  She placed third in her heat in 56.84 seconds, an O-State school record.  She came into the event seeded 18th.  Senior Kelly Stevens earned 12th place in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 14.65 seconds.  Stevens finished sixth in her heat after coming into the meet as the 15th seed overall.  "It was a heck of a ride," O-State coach Matt LoPiccolo said.  "These women ran awesome.  I was a little disappointed to end on that note, but I couldn't be more proud of them."


Stevens and Robertson to make return trip to NCAA's! 
Senior Kelly Stevens and junior Ashlee Robertson will make return trips to the NCAA Track & Field Championships this weekend at Millikin University in Decatur, IL.  Both will try to follow up their double All-American performances from the indoor championships where Stevens placed 5th in the 800 meters and Robertson finished 6th in the 400, as well as teaming to finish 8th in the Distance Medley Relay.  Stevens will make her second trip to the outdoor championships.  She became the first woman in Oneonta State school history to compete at the NCAA Track & Field Championships, when she placed 15th in the 1,500 meters last May at St. Lawrence University.  This time, she will run the 800, where she is the 15th seed with a time of 2:14.35.  Robertson makes her first trip to the outdoor championships.  She is the 18th seed in the 400 meters with a time of 57.19.  Stevens will run her semifinal heat of the 800 at 3:45pm central time on Friday.  Robertson will follow with her 400 semifinal at 6:15pm.  The finals will be Saturday with the 400 going at 2:30pm and the 800 at 3:10pm.  "Once again, we're psyched to be heading NCAA's," said Head Coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "It's been a dream year for Kelly and Ashlee.  They're looking to finish it off on a high note this weekend."  Full meet information is available at http://www.millikin.edu/athletics/track/NCAA2004/NCAA2004.html and ranked performance lists are at http://www.raceberryjam.com/ncodwent.htm.


MIT LAST CHANCE QUALIFIER - SATURDAY, MAY 22, 2004

Junior Ashlee Robertson placed 3rd in the 400 meters with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 57.19.  The time broke her own school record and has her currently ranked 21st in the country.  She will have to wait until Monday evening to find out if she gets into the NCAA Championships that will be contested next weekend at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. 
“Ashlee was faced with trying to qualify for NCAA’s in her last attempt of the season,” said Head Coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “Not only did she accept the challenge, but she excelled in doing so.”  Robertson also placed 2nd in the 200 meters with a school record time of 25.38, which just missed the NCAA standard by 4 hundredths of a second.


ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ WILLIAMS COLLEGE - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MAY 14-15, 2004

The Red Dragons placed 19th out of 52 teams with 19 points.  The 1600 meter relay team of freshman Maureen Verdier, junior Ashlee Robertson, and seniors Kelly Stevens and Rose Velan placed 2nd in a time of 3:58.84 after a long delay due to thunderstorms.  Stevens was the highest placing individual with a 3rd place effort in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:42.06.  She missed the NCAA provisional qualifying time by 6 hundredths of a second.  Robertson placed 4th in the 400 meters with a time of 58.52.  She also placed 10th in the 200 with a school record time of 25.48.  Verdier set her own school record time in the 100 meters hurdles with a time of 15.87 which placed her 15th.  She also placed 11th in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:06.71.  Freshman Kelly Huth placed 20th in the discus with a throw of 34.27 meters (112' 5").


UNIVERSITY @ ALBANY SPRING CLASSIC - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MAY 7-8, 2004

The Red Dragons placed an impressive 3rd out of 18 teams with 60 points.  Senior Kelly Stevens won the 800 meters and qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships in a school record time of 2:14.35.  She also teamed with classmate Rose Velan, junior Ashlee Robertson, and freshman Maureen Verdier to place 2nd in the 1600 meter relay in a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:57.73.  Verdier led off the race with a 61.8 split and handed to Robertson who catapulted the Red Dragons into the led.  Stevens took the baton next and ran a PR split of 59.2.  Velan anchored O-State with her own PR split of 59.3.

The Red Dragons won the meet with 195 points, 29 points ahead of SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh State and well ahead of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy who finished with 16 points.

SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ CORTLAND
- FRIDAY-SATURDAY, APRIL 22-23, 2004

O-State placed 5th with 64 points improving on last year's first season in outdoor track & field where they placed 8th with 25 points at SUNYAC's.  They were led by senior Kelly Stevens who won both the 800 and 1500 meters.  She started the day by running away from the field in the 1500 in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:43.97.  In the 800, she came from behind to win by 1 hundredth of a second in 2:19.20. 
"Kelly's double win was very impressive," O-State coach Matt LoPiccolo said.  "To pick up both wins was a very special occurrence."  Junior Ashlee Robertson picked up the SUNYAC Championship in the 400 meters, as she did indoors, in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 57.73.  She also placed 2nd in the 200 meters with a time of 26.17.  Freshman Maureen Verdier won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:07.65.  The trio teamed with senior Rose Velan to place 2nd in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 4:04.26.  Additionally, Verdier, Velan, and Robertson joined with sophomore Erin Putnam to place 3rd in the 4x100 relay in an ECAC qualifying and school record time of 51.63.  Freshman Kelly Huth rounded out the scoring with a 4th place finish in the javelin with a toss of 30.18 meters (99' 0").  In the 10,000 meters, freshman Laura Ewald established a new school record by placing 10th in a time of 42:36.73.

CAPTAIN’S CLASSIC @ CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY - SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 2004


The first meet of the break began at the Captains Classic at Christopher Newport News University in Virginia.  The women had several school record breaking performances on the track and in the field.  Freshman Maureen Verdier broke the school record and qualified for ECAC’s in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.40 seconds.  She also had a 14th place finish and qualified for SUNYAC’s in the 200 meter event with a time of 28.11 seconds.  Later in the day, senior Kelly Stevens finished 3rd in the 5,000 meter race with an ECAC qualifying time and new school record of 18:50.95 seconds.  In the field, freshman Kelly Huth and Caitlyn Fanning both threw SUNYAC qualifying distances of 30.65 meters and 25.83 respectively, with Kelly’s throw setting a new school record.

DICK SHEA OPEN @ WEST POINT - SATURDAY, MARCH 27, 2004

The warm temperatures and sunshine welcomed the dragons to the 2004 outdoor season.  Freshman Kelly Huth was the top performer of the day placing 6th in the javelin with a throw of 29.82 meters and 7th in the discus with a throw of 35.03 meters.  Both efforts set school records and qualified her for SUNYAC's with the discus toss qualifying her for ECAC's.  Both freshman Kaci Duffy and sophomore Holly Cooper qualified for SUNYAC's and placed 8th in their respective events.  Duffy threw 30.35 meters in the discus, and Cooper threw 32.31 meters in the hammer which set a new school record.  Freshman Maureen Verdier set a new school record and qualified for ECAC's in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.45 seconds.  She also placed 11th in the 100 meters with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 13.25 seconds.  Senior Rose Velan also qualified for SUNYAC's in the 200 meters with a time of 28.06 seconds.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS @ UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MARCH 12-13, 2004

Senior Kelly Stevens and junior Ashlee Robertson both earned individual All-American honors by placing 5th and 6th in the 800 and 400 meters, respectively.  Stevens ran 2:16.46 and improved 1 place from her semi-final performance.  Robertson ran 57.79 and maintained her 6th place seeding from Friday.  “It is great feeling anytime you bring home an All-American,” commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “It is especially satisfying to have 3 All-American performances (including the DMR from Friday night) in just our 2nd year of existence.”  The Red Dragons placed 23rd out of 64 teams who scored in the championship.  Their 8 points outdistancing SUNYAC powers Geneseo and Cortland who placed 52nd and 59th with 2 points and 1 point, respectively.  “The national championship meet has brought out the quality in our program.  We do not have the depth to win the SUNYAC team title at the moment.  However, we proved this weekend that we not only have 4 of the best athletes in the conference, but 4 of the best in the country.”

Oneonta State Women’s Track & Field history was made Friday night as the distance medley relay team earned All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.  Juniors Jen Macri and Ashlee Robertson and seniors Rose Velan and Kelly Stevens ran a time of 12:10.67 in placing 8th.  The top 8 finishers in each event earn All-American honors.  Earlier in the day, Robertson advanced to Saturday’s final of the 400 meters.  She placed 3rd in her semi-final heat, and 6th overall, running a time of 57.60.  The top 8 will run at 4:55 pm CT on Saturday.  Stevens followed with her own 6th place overall finish in the 800 meters.  She ran 2:16.11 and placed 2nd in her heat to advance to Saturday’s final at 5:35 pm CT.

ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ BOWDOIN COLLEGE - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MARCH 5-6, 2004

The Red Dragons placed 12th out of 38 schools with 30 points.  Junior Ashlee Robertson claimed the school's first ever ECAC Individual Championship. 
She blew away the field and her own school record in the 200 meters running a time of 25.33.  Senior Kelly Stevens placed 2nd in the 1,000 meters and shattered her own school record with a time of 2:55.06.  "We have two of the best athletes in the Atlantic Region," said head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "They showed that this weekend."  On Friday night, the duo joined with senior Rose Velan and junior Jen Macri to place 2nd in the Distance Medley Relay.  They improved their NCAA provisional qualifying mark and are currently ranked 9th in the country with a time of 12:06.77.  On Saturday, both Velan and Macri placed 7th in their respective events.  Velan ran the 500 meters in 1:21.61 and Macri ran the 800 meters in 2:20.71.

NYU FASTRACK INVITE - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2004

The quartet of seniors Rose Velan and Kelly Stevens and juniors Jen Macri and Ashlee Robertson were at it again at New York's Armory Track & Field Center on Friday.  They joined together in setting a new school record and provisionally qualifying for NCAA's in the 1600 meter relay.  Their time of 3:58.55 shattered their old school record by 6.5 seconds.  Velan led off in 61.1 and handed to Macri who duplicated Velan's run.  Stevens was next in a relay split PR of 59.9 and Robertson anchored with a blistering 56.2.  They placed 2nd in their heat and 7th overall.  Individually, Macri placed 2nd in her heat of the 800 meters and 6th overall in a time of 2:19.79, which was good enough for a PR and ECAC qualifying mark.  Stevens placed 2nd in her heat (9th overall) of the 500 meters with a new school record and ECAC qualifying time of 1:18.05.  Robertson placed 10th overall in the 60 dash with a school record time of 8.06.  Velan won her heat of the 400 (24th overall) in a personal best time of 1:01.72.  Freshman Maureen Verdier placed 15th overall in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 10.38.  Sophomore Erin Putnam placed 17th in the 500, just missing the ECAC standard in a time of 1:23.79.

SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ HOBART/WILLIAM SMITH - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2004

Results - Team / Individual

The Red Dragons placed 3rd out of 9 schools with 74 points, improving 4 spots over last year's inaugural season where they placed 7th with 23 points.  O-State won 3 individual SUNYAC Championships on the day while also picking up the win in the 4x800 meter relay.  Junior Ashlee Robertson won the 200 and 400 meters titles with times of 25.79 and 58.21, respectively.  The first was a school record and improved on her ECAC qualifying time while the later was a meet record and a NCAA provisional qualifying time.  She also placed 2nd in the 55 meter dash with a school record time of 7.42.  Senior Kelly Stevens won the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:05.34.  Earlier in the day, she placed 2nd in the 1,500 meters with a NCAA provisonal qualifying time of 4:43.39.  She ended the day by anchoring the 4x800 meter relay to a come from behind victory in a time of 9:39.41.  She passed Geneseo's Marta Scott down the homestretch to take the victory.  Sophomore Erin Putnam, senior Rose Velan, and junior Jen Macri teamed with Stevens to set a new school record in the event.  Earlier in the day, both Velan and Macri picked up 3rd place finishes in the 500 and 800, respectively with times of 1:20.11 and 2:25.05.  Putnam teamed with freshmen Mallory Baughman and Laura Ewald and sophomore Maria Compson to place 5th in a time of 14:21.10 in the Distance Medley Relay.  Ewald and Compson paired with freshman Maureen Verdier and senior Abby McQueeney Penamonte to place 6th and pick a point in the 4x400 meter relay.  Verdier placed 6th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.19.  In the prelims, she ran a time of 9.13, good enough for a personal best and school record.  Freshman Kelly Huth placed 5th in the shot put with a throw of 10.52 meters (34' 6 1/4").  She moved up one place by tossing her best throw on her last attempt.  "The women announced their presence today," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "We turned a lot of heads at this meet.  Mike (Schmidt, associate coach) and I are extremely excited!"

ST. VALENTINE'S INVITATIONAL @ BOSTON UNIVERSITY - FRIDAY-SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13-14, 2004

The foursome of juniors Jen Macri, Ashlee Robertson and seniors Rose Velan and Kelly Stevens made O-State Track & Field history on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday night, they joined forces and placed 3rd in the Distance Medley Relay with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12:10.77.  They knocked 8 seconds off the school record in which they set last year at the ECAC Championships.  On Saturday, the NCAA qualifying continued as Robertson placed 6th (3rd in heat) in the 400 meters with a new school record time of 56.40.  Her time automatically qualified her for the NCAA Championships to be held on March 12th and 13th.  Stevens qualified for NCAA's in her 3rd event of the year by placing 12th (4th in heat) in the 800 meters with a provisional time of 2:15.11.  Both Robertson (400) and Stevens (800), along with the DMR, are currently ranked in the top 5 in the country in all 3 events.  Macri placed 27th (4th in heat) in the 800 with a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying time of 2:20.84.  Velan placed 8th in the 500 meters, winning her heat, in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 1:19.14.

Freshman Kaitlin O'Sullivan placed 6th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:32.66, qualifying her for next week's SUNYAC Championships.  Freshman Caitlyn Fanning also qualified for SUNYAC's.  She placed 12th in the shot put with a throw of 10.45 meters (34' 3 1/2").  In the 5,000 meters, O-State runners placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.  Sophomore Maria Compson placed 2nd with a time of 20:57.79 and was followed by freshman Laura Ewald (21:16.37) and senior Abby McQueeney Penamonte (21:44.82).

Junior Ashlee Robertson and senior Kelly Stevens became the first women in school history to provisionally qualify for the Indoor NCAA Championships in individual events.  Stevens started the day for O-State with a victory in the Mile run.  She led for most of the race and ran the 2nd half faster than the first and finished in a time of 5:06.37.  She broke her own school record by 9 seconds and is currently ranked 7th in the country.  Robertson followed suit and won the 400 in convincing manner and broke her own school record with a time of 58.27.  She is currently ranked 5th in the country.  The ladies ended their day by joining senior Rose Velan and sophomore Erin Putnam in placing 4th in the 4x400 meter relay with a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 4:05.02.  Robertson ran a 57.2 split for her anchor leg.  Both Velan and Putnam qualified for SUNYAC's in their individual events, as well.  Velan placed 5th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.18 and Putnam had a huge personal best in placing 10th in the 500 meters with a time of 1:24.20.  Freshman Kaitlin O'Sullivan also qualified in the 500 with a time of 1:26.63.  Sophomore Maria Compson added a school record in the 5,000 meters.  Her time of 20:50.41 also qualified her for SUNYAC's on February 21st.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL II - SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 2004

The Red Dragons had an impressive showing at the non-scoring Wesleyan Invite.  Senior Kelly Stevens had a dominating performance in the 800 meters.  She took control of the race 250 meters in and ran away from the field for the victory.  Her time of 2:18.94 broke her own school record and qualified her the ECAC Championships.  Junior Ashlee Robertson followed suit with an equally dominating performance in the 200 meters.  She blew the field away in breaking her own school record and qualifying for ECAC's, as well, with a time of 26.10.  She also placed 4th in the 55 meter dash with a school record time of 7.48.  Senior Rose Velan won the 600 meters and established a new school record of 1:43.68.  Junior Jen Macri placed 3rd in the 800 with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 2:23.29.  The foursome joined forces to break the school record, qualify for ECAC's, and win in a convincing manner in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:47.08.  Robertson led off and took the lead with a lap to go and Macri, Velan, and Stevens never looked back, lapping every team except for one.  Earlier in the day, Sophomore Erin Putnam ran a personal best and qualified for SUNYAC's in the 400 meters placing 7th with a time of 1:05.03.

ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY INDOOR CLASSIC - SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 2004

The Red Dragons placed 6th with 57 points at the Saints Indoor Classic.  Junior Ashlee Robertson accounted for 20 points of those points in picking up wins in the 55 and 200 meter dashes.  She broke both of her own school records running times of 7.50 and 26.24, respectively and is currently ranked 1st in the SUNYAC in both events.  Her time in the 200 qualified her for the ECAC Championships.  Senior Kelly Stevens and junior Jen Macri joined Robertson in ECAC qualifying.  Macri won the 500 meters in a time of 1:21.43 and Stevens placed 2nd in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:02.91.  The duo joined forces with senior Rose Velan and sophomore Erin Putnam in placing 2nd in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 4:13.38.  Earlier in the day, Velan qualified for SUNYAC's in the 400 with a time of 1:03.32 and Putnam hit the SUNYAC 500 meter standard with a time of 1:27.12.

ARMORY COLLEGIATE OPEN - FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 2004

Senior Kelly Stevens and junior Ashlee Robertson led the Red Dragons into 2004 with SUNYAC leading and ECAC qualifying performances.  Stevens set a school record in placing 5th in the 500 meters in a time of 1:19.96.  Robertson followed with her own school record breaking run in the 200 meters blazing through the line in :26.25.  Junior Jen Macri qualified for SUNYAC's in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.45.  Stevens and Macri joined with senior Rose Velan and sophomore Erin Putnam in qualifying for SUNYAC's in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:14.24.

ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY RELAYS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2003

Junior Ashlee Robertson won the 400 meters and just missed qualifying provisionally for the NCAA Championships in a personal best time of :58.95, as competition in the fall semester came to a close.  Robertson ran nearly a second faster than her previous best as she missed the NCAA mark by 5 hundredths of a second, but hit both the SUNYAC and ECAC standards.  Freshman Maureen Verdier also qualified in the 400 meters placing 3rd in a time of 1:03.34.  Verdier also placed 2nd in the 55 meter hurdles in a SUNYAC time of :09.27.  Classmate Kelly Huth qualified for SUNYAC's in both the shot put and weight throw.  She placed 5th in the shot with a throw of 10.74 meters (35' 3") and 9th in the weight with a toss of 10.17 meters (33' 4 1/2").  Sophomore Holly Cooper bettered her SUNYAC mark with a 5th place finish in the weight throw with a new personal best toss of 11.53 meters (37' 10").  The Red Dragons return to competition on Friday, January 16th at the New York Armory.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY RELAYS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2003

The Red Dragons opened the 2003-2004 season at the Cornell University Relays.  Junior Ashlee Robertson picked up where she left off last season by breaking her own school record and hitting the SUNYAC qualifying standard in placing 20th in the 60 meters with a time of :08.24.  She also placed 12th in the 300 with a time of :43.87.  Sophomore Holly Cooper had a huge personal best in the weight throw.  She placed 15th with a SUNYAC qualifying mark of 11.46 meters (37' 7 1/2").  Two freshmen got in the qualifying act, as well.  Kelly Huth placed 13th in the shot put with a heave of 9.85 meters (32' 3 3/4") while Maureen Verdier got the day started for O-State in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of :09.92 in the semi-finals.  She placed 10th overall.
