Oneonta State Track & Field Athletes earned major national scholar-athlete honors from the national coaches’ association when the individual and team All-Academic teams were announced last week.  Senior Musu Jackson-Buckner (100m, 200m, 4x100m, TJ) was named the USTFCCCA National Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  She was also joined on the individual All-Academic Team by graduate student Ashlee Robertson (100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m) and juniors Kaitlin O’Sullivan (800m, 1500m, 3000m Steeplechase) and Maureen Verdier (400m IH, 4x100m).
To qualify for the USTFCCCA Individual All-Academic Track & Field Team, athletes needed to balance a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 with an NCAA qualifying standard in their event.

The Women's Track & Field Team earned National All-Academic Team Honors, as well.  The team compiled a 3.26 GPA, well above the 3.0 needed for the honor.  The full women’s article can be found at http://ustfccca.cstv.com/sports/division3/spec-rel/071906aac.html.

NCAA Championships @ Benedictine University – Thursday-Saturday, May 25-27, 2006

Red Dragons place 3rd in team championship while Musu Jackson-Buckner claims the National Championship in the 200 meters!

Senior Musu Jackson-Buckner saved her best for last capturing the NCAA Division III title in the 200 meters at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The title capped a historic day for the Women's Track and Field program as the team finished tied for third overall in just their fourth year of NCAA Division III competition. All five Oneonta women who traveled to Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois for the NCAA Div. III Outdoor Championships returned as All-Americans as they combined to earn All-American honors in five individual events along with the 4x100 relay. The top eight finishers in each event earned All-American honors.

For Jackson-Buckner the title marked the end of a record breaking two-year career at Oneonta State where she has etched her name in the record book numerous times. Her title in the 200 meters is the first NCAA title of any kind in the history of the women's track and field program, while her time of 23.75 shattered her own school record and goes down as the fourth fastest 200 time ever in NCAA Division III competition.  She opened the day with the triple jump where she placed 14th with a jump of 37' 1/2”. She then teamed up with junior Maureen Verdier, freshman Melissa Kanterman, and graduate student Ashlee Robertson in the 4x100 relay where the quartet earn All-American honors with a third place finish in a school and SUNYAC record time of 47.05 seconds. In her third event of the day, Jackson-Buckner ran the 100 meters and finished second in a time of 11.85 and earn All-American honors in the event. With just the 200 remaining in her quest for a national title, Jackson-Buckner ran the best race of her career crossing the line in 23.75 seconds. She edged out the second place finisher of City College of New York by .05 of a second while running the fastest Division III time this season. Her time was .25 of a second faster than the 24.00 she ran in the qualifying round on Thursday and shattered her previous best time entering the meet of 24.16 which she ran at the SUNYAC Championships last month.  Jackson-Buckner finished her career with six All-American honors.

Graduate student Robertson also closed out her collegiate career on Saturday earning All-American honors in the both the 400 meters and the 4x100 meter relay. In the 400 meters Robertson crossed the line in 55.96 seconds to place sixth. It was her second All-American honor in the outdoor 400 meters, which complements her two indoor plaques.  With the addition of the 400 relay All-American honor, Robertson now has All-American plaques in every relay that the NCAA contests (1600 meter relay and Distance Medley Relay).  She finished her brilliant career with seven All-American honors.

Junior Kaitlin O'Sullivan capped a breakout year with a pair of individual All-American honors on Saturday. In the 1500 meters, O'Sullivan finished an astounding third in a time of 4:32.85 to earn her first outdoor All-American honor. O'Sullivan entered the day as the seventh seed in the event and narrowly missed her school record time of 4:31.50 which she set in the qualifying round on Thursday. She then came back an hour later and finished as the national runner-up in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.99 to pick up her second All-American honors of the meet.  Her fourteen points were expected, yet invaluable in the team race.

Verdier also competed in two events this weekend finishing 13th in the 400 meter hurdles on Thursday with a time of 1:02.63 and running the first leg of the third place 4x100 relay. Verdier's All-American honor in the relay is her first outdoor All-American honor and second overall after running on the 4th place 1600 meter relay team indoors in March. Kanterman earned her first All-American honor of any kind in the 4x100 relay running the third leg and became the first freshman in school history to claim an All-American plaque.

The Red Dragons finished the meet tied for third with the City College of New York with 41 points. The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh women captured the team title with 52 points while Williams College finished second with 42 points to narrowly edge out the Red Dragons. The NCAA only had one third place trophy on hand and
due to the tie, only one team would get the honor of taking the trophy home while the other waited for a new one to be mailed.  Thus, Oneonta State Associate Head Coach Mike Schmidt was called upon and came through in the clutch defeating City College of New York in the NCAA sanctioned Rock, Paper, Scissors tiebreaker to claim the trophy.

SUNYAC Championships @ Brockport - Friday-Saturday, April 28-29, 2006

The Red Dragons placed 3rd in the team championship amassing 134.5 points, for their highest finish ever at the Outdoor SUNYAC Championships.  They collected 7 individual titles and won both relays to win 9 of the 20 events contested.  In the process, they hit 8 NCAA standards with 2 being automatic qualifiers.  Senior Musu Jackson-Buckner was named the Track Athlete of the Meet for her outstanding performances.  She won the 100, 200, and triple jump while running the 2nd leg on the 4x100 relay.  Her times of 10.83 and 24.16 in the Friday semi-finals in the 100 and 200 dashes respectively, set meet, facility, and school records while hitting the NCAA automatic standards.  Her time in the 200 set the conference record, as well and gave Jackson-Buckner the career sweep in the event, winning the Outdoor SUNYAC Championship for 4 consecutive years.  She is currently ranked #1 in Division III in both events by sizeable margins.  On her first attempt in the triple jump on Saturday morning, Jackson-Buckner proceeded to jump within 1cm of the automatic NCAA mark with a leap of 11.99 meters.  It broke both the facility and school records.  She then teamed with classmate Ashlee Robertson, junior Maureen Verdier, and freshman Melissa Kanterman to break the conference, meet, facility, and school records in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 47.78, which was good enough for the NCAA provisional mark.  Robertson won the 400 meters for the 3rd consecutive year.  Her efforts this time around gave her an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 56.37 seconds.  She also placed 2nd in the 200 meters with an NCAA provisional mark of 24.98, which she ran in both the finals and semi-finals.  For Verdier, the 3rd time was the charm for the 400 hurdles.  In her freshman year of 2004, she won the SUNYAC title, but missed the NCAA mark.  Last year, she hit the NCAA standard, but finished 3rd.  This time, she won the title handily and hit the NCAA standard with a time of 1:03.36 in the semi-finals.  She also placed 2nd in the 100 meters with an ECAC time of 12.51 in the semi's.  Kanterman picked up a pair of 3rd place finishes, completely the 1-2-3 medal sweep for the Red Dragons in the 100 and 200 meters.  Her times of 12.55 and 26.13 qualified her for ECAC's, as well.  Not to be outdone, junior Kaitlin O'Sullivan had an impressive weekend, too.  She opened Saturday with a win in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.  Her time of 11:04.80 hit the NCAA provisional standard and broke the meet, facility, and the school records.  She followed with a 2:14.68 clocking in blowing the field away in the 800 meters.  She broke the meet and facility records in the process.  In both events, she was seeded 2nd to Geneseo runners who had already qualified for NCAA's.  To end the day, O'Sullivan teamed with Verdier, Kanterman, and Robertson to win the 4x400 relay in a meet record time of 3:58.32.  For Robertson and Jackson-Buckner, they end their SUNYAC careers with a combined 31 individual and relay titles.
