NCAA Championships @ UW-Oshkosh (Oshkosh, WI) - Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26, 2007

Maureen Verdier capped off her brilliant career with a 6th place finish in the 400 meter hurdles to claim her third All-American award in the last two years.  The senior was clocked in 1:01.93 to move up one spot from the semi-finals.  It was Verdier's first individual All-American plaque, which she will add to her two existing relay awards.  Her 3 points placed Oneonta State in a tie for 51st in the country.

In her first day of competition at the 2007 Outdoor NCAA Championships, senior Maureen Verdier advanced to Saturday's final of the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.01.  She placed 2nd in her heat and 7th overall to claim lane 2 for the final.  The top 9 advanced.  Verdier can capture her first individual All-American plaque of her career with a top 8 finish on Saturday.  She is already a 2-time All-American, as she was on last year's indoor 1600 meter relay and outdoor 400 meter relay, which placed 4th and 3rd, respectively.


ECAC Championships @ Oneonta State - Friday, May 18, 2007

The women scored 36 points to place eighth in the final standings, only 12 points from a 3rd place plaque. They were led by senior Maureen Verdier and Kaitlin O’Sullivan and sophomore Melissa Kanterman.  Of the three, Verdier had the best meet with a second place finish in the 100 in a time of 12.56 and a third place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.  In the hurdles, she was able to improve her NCAA automatic qualifying time to 1:01.16 in that event, which she will compete in next week at the NCAA meet.  Kanterman placed fourth in the 100 with a time of 12.75 and fifth in the 200 with a personal best of 25.81.  O’Sullivan captured a sixth place medal in the 1,500-meter run and seventh in the 800 meters.  The quartet of Verdier, Kanterman, sophomore Janine Sacca, and freshman Kristen Stein ended the day by placing 2nd in the 4x400 in a season's best time of 3:59.79.

Senior Maureen Verdier (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and sophomore Melissa Kanterman (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) both advanced to the finals in the 100 meters. Verdier won her heat in a time of 12.76 while Kanterman was tied for the third fastest qualifying time, clocking 12.93 seconds.  Junior Janelle Bashant (Ford Edward, NY/South Glens Falls) ran the 11th fastest time (16.36 seconds) in the 100 hurdles trials.  She came into the event seeded 19th.


NYC Qualifying Challenge @ Icahn Stadium - Sunday, May 13, 2007

In a last chance qualifier for ECAC's the Red Dragons not only hit ECAC standards, but NCAA marks, as well.  Maureen Verdier opened the day by winning the 400 hurdles in a school record, meet record, and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:01.65.  The senior is currently ranked #4 in Division III.  Classmate Kaitlin O'Sullivan finished 4th in the championship section of the 800 meters.  Her time of 2:13.73 was a season's best and hit the NCAA provisional standard.  Also in the 800, freshman Chelsea Bendert won her heat in a personal best time of 2:23.76.  Sophomore Stephanie Gordon won the shot put with a school record heave of 11.25 meters.  She also placed 3rd in the discus with a toss of 31.76 meters.  Junior Janelle Bashant hit the ECAC mark for the 1st time in her career, placing 6th in the 100 hurdles in a time of 16.30.  Sophomore Melissa Kanterman placed 7th in the 200 with an ECAC time of 26.22 and freshman Kristen Stein ran a huge personal best of 59.97 in the 400 to place 13th.  Oneonta State will host the 2007 ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this Thursday and Friday, May 17th and 18th, starting at 2:00pm and 10:00am, respectively.

Oneonta State May Meet - Saturday, May 5, 2007

The Red Dragons beat the Cardinals of Plattsburgh in a dual meet with a score of 78-60.  Maureen Verdier led the way by winning the 100 and leading off the victorious 4x100 relay.  The senior also ran a personal best and ECAC qualifying time of 58.29 to place 2nd in the 400 meters.  Sophomore Melissa Kanterman joined her on the 4x100 and also won the 200 in a time of 26.54.  Classmate Janine Sacca and freshman Kristen Stein ran the 3rd and 4th legs on the 4x100.  Senior Kaitlin O'Sullivan won the 800 and 1500 while junior Janelle Bashant won the high and long jumps was 2nd in the 400 hurdles.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning won both the javelin and hammer throws while sophomore Stephanie Gordon won the discus.  Full results can be found at

SUNYAC Championships @ Fredonia
- Friday-Saturday, April 27-28, 2007

The Red Dragons placed 6th with 76 points as Kaitlin O'Sullivan won her 9th SUNYAC title of her career.  The senior defended her 800 meter crown from both outdoors last year and indoors this past February with a time of 2:19.93 in cold, windy, and wet conditions.  She also placed 2nd in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:45.51.  She started the day by teaming with classmate Maureen Verdier, and sophomores Melissa Kanterman and Janine Sacca to place 4th in the 4x100 relay in a time of 51.59.  Verdier, Kanterman, and O'Sullivan ended the day by teaming with freshman Kristen Stein to place 2nd in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:08.14.  Kanterman was the runner-up in the 200 meters, missing her 1st individual SUNYAC title by .02 seconds.  She also placed 4th in the 100 with a time of 12.89.  Verdier earned 2 runner-up finished herself.  She was 2nd in both the 100, with a time of 12.77, and the 400 hurdles, where her time of 1:03.45 hit the NCAA provisional mark.  She also placed 7th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.29.  Junior Janelle Bashant was 4th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.62.  Freshman Chelsea Bendert finished the scoring on the track by placing 8th in the 800 meters.  In the field, sophomore Stephanie Gordon placed 5th in the discus with a toss of 31.70 meters.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning placed 6th in the hammer throw and 8th in the javelin with marks of 38.49 and 22.29 meters, respectively to close out her SUNYAC career.

Cortland Classic - Saturday, April 21, 2007

Maureen Verdier led the charge in qualifying for ECACs in 3 events with 1 being an NCAA provisional mark.  The senior opened the day by anchoring the 4x100 relay team to a 3rd place finish.  She teamed with sophomores Janine Sacca and Melissa Kanterman and freshman Kristen Stein to run an ECAC time of 50.98.  Verdier followed that with a win in the 100 hurdles in an ECAC time of 15.57, which also broke her own school record.  She ended the day by placing 3rd in the 400 hurdles in an ECAC and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:02.56, .02 off her own school record.  Sophomore Stephanie Gordon placed 3rd in the discus with a toss of 36.20 meters which hit the ECAC qualifying mark.  This is the first time Gordon has qualified for ECAC's.  Her throw also broke the school record.  Rounding out the ECAC qualifying was Kaitlin O'Sullivan, who placed 6th in the 800 in a time of 2:15.20.  The senior also anchored the 4x400 relay team of Sacca, Kanterman, and Stein to the 3rd place finish in an ECAC and season best time of 4:03.66.

The College of New Jersey Invitational - Saturday, April 14, 2007

The Red Dragons placed 12th out of 16 teams with 19 points.  Freshman Chelsea Bendert was the highest finisher on the day, winning her heat and placing 5th overall in the 800 meters with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 2:25.10.  Classmate Kristen Stein was right behind in 8th place in a SUNYAC time of 2:26.35.  Senior Maureen Verdier and sophomore Melissa Kanterman both hit the ECAC standard in the 100, with Verdier placing 10th in 12.47 and Kanterman 15th in 12.84.  The duo also placed 8th and 10th respectively, in the 200 meters with SUNYAC times of 26.46 and 26.63.  Junior Janelle Bashant placed 7th in the 100 hurdles in a SUNYAC time of 16.68.  Kaitlin O'Sullivan hit the SUNYAC mark in the 400, also placing 7th with a time of 1:01.35.  The senior also teamed with Bendert, Stein, and sophomore Janine Sacca to place 3rd in the 4x400 in an ECAC time of 4:05.93.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning placed 6th in the javelin with a SUNYAC mark of 29.38 meters while sophomore Stephanie Gordon placed 8th in the discus with a SUNYAC toss of 33.11 meters.

Richard Stockton College Osprey Open - Saturday, April 7, 2007


The Red Dragons opened the 2007 Outdoor season in 30 degree weather at the Osprey Open in southern New Jersey.  Maureen Verdier led the way with a pair of runner-up finishes.  The senior hit ECAC times in the 100 (12.83) and 400 hurdles (1:06.07).  Sophomore Melissa Kanterman was runner-up in the 200 with a time of 27.10.  She also placed 4th in the 100 with a time of 13.44.  Both times were SUNYAC qualifiers.  Classmate Janine Sacca was 11th in the 100 with a SUNYAC time of 13.95.  Senior Kaitlin O'Sullivan placed 3rd in the 400 in a time of 1:02.02 and freshman Chelsea Bendert was 7th in a time of 1:03.58.  Both times were SUNYAC qualifiers.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning was the runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 28.25 meters, which qualified her for SUNYAC's.  Sophomore Stephanie Gordon placed 13th in the discus with a SUNYAC mark of 29.92 meters.

NCAA Championships @ Rose Hulman Institute (IN) – Friday-Saturday, March 9-10, 2007

Oneonta State’s Kaitlin O’Sullivan earned her 3rd and 4th All-American honors of her career with a runner-up and 4th place finish in the 800 meters and mile, respectively.  O’Sullivan started the day by running a personal best and school record time of 4:52.78 in the mile, moving from 8th to 4th overall in the final 600 meters.  She beat her own school record of 4:54.55 set at Boston University exactly one month ago.  An hour and 25 minutes later in the 800 meters, O’Sullivan moved from 7th after the 400 meter mark to 2nd where she chased the eventual winner.  Her time of 2:11.95 was another personal best and school record.  The previous mark of 2:13.37 was also her own, set two weeks ago at the New York Armory.  “Kaitlin once again proved that she is one of the premier student-athletes in Division III,” commented head coach Mike Schmidt.  O’Sullivan’s 13 points placed Oneonta State 13th in the country.

Oneonta State’s Kaitlin O’Sullivan advanced to the finals of the NCAA Championships in both the 800 meters and mile on Friday night.  She started the day by placing 7th in her heat in the mile in a time of 4:59.24, her second fastest time ever.  The top 3 in each of 2 heats plus the next fastest 4 times advanced to the final.  O’Sullivan’s time beat the entire second heat to secure her spot in Saturday’s 2 o’clock final.  An hour and 45 minutes later, the Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year placed 2nd in her in the 800 and obtained one of the 2 automatic qualifiers for the final.  The next 4 fastest times also advanced.  Her time of 2:14.39 was the second fastest time overall, as well.  The final is slated for 3:25pm.

ECAC Championships @ Wesleyan University (CT) – Friday-Saturday, March 2-3, 2007

The Red Dragons placed 16th out of 56 scoring teams with 22 points.  Junior Kaitlin O’Sullivan successfully defended her 2006 Indoor ECAC 1,000 meter championship, this time with a new meet record.  O’Sullivan led from the gun and held off the former meet record holder to cross the line first in a time of 2:52.26.  Shauneen Garrahan from Amherst College held the previous meet record of 2:54.78 set at Bowdoin College in 2004.  The time also broke O’Sullivan’s own school record of 2:53.76 set a month ago at the Syracuse Invitational.  Later in the day, she teamed with senior Maureen Verdier and sophomores Melissa Kanterman and Janine Sacca to place 6th in the 4x400 relay in a season best time of 4:05.20.  On Friday, the later three teamed with freshman Kristen Stein to also place 6th in the 4x200 relay in a time of 1:49.83.  Earlier in the day on Saturday, Verdier placed 5th in the 55 dash in a time of 7.39, while Kanterman placed 7th in the 200 with a time of 26.56.

NYU Fastrack Invite @ The NY Armory - Friday, February 23, 2007

The Red Dragons traveled to NYC to run at NY's famed Amory Track.  Senior Kaitlin O'Sullivan continued to run wild, as she placed 2nd in the 800 meters.  Her time of 2:13.37 broke her own school record of 2:13.83, set last year at the Armory.  It was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time, missing the automatic mark by 2 hundredths of a second.  She ended the day by anchoring the 4x400 meter relay team of senior Maureen Verdier, sophomore Melissa Kanterman, and freshman Kristen Stein to a 5th place overall finish, winning their heat in an ECAC time of 4:06.40.  Earlier in the day, Kanterman set a new personal best in the 60 dash with a time of 8.11.  Stein earned a trip to next week's ECAC Championships with a 9th place finish in the 500 meters.  Her time of 1:21.66 beat the ECAC qualifying time by over 2 seconds.  Classmate Chelsea Bendert was right on her heels, accomplishing the same feat with a time of 1:21.69 that placed her 10th.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning ended her indoor career with a personal best throw in the 20 pound weight.  Her heave of 12.69 meters beat her own school record of 12.46 meters set two weeks ago at MIT.

SUNYAC Championships @ Hobart/William Smith Colleges – Saturday, February 17, 2007

The Red Dragons placed 5th with 65 points while Kaitlin O’Sullivan lived up to her two time All-American billing.  The junior won both the 800 meters and mile, anchored the victorious 4x400 meter relay, and was named the meet’s most valuable track athlete.  She started the day by winning the mile in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 5:03.67.  She followed that by blowing away the field in the 800 meters in another NCAA provisional mark and shattering the meet record by over a second and a half in running a time of 2:14.85.  Finally, she teamed with senior Maureen Verdier and sophomores Melissa Kanterman and Janine Sacca to win the meet finale in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:05.43.  Verdier picked up two runner-up finishes on the day in the 55 and 55 hurdles.  Her times of 7.42 and 8.82, respectively were ECAC qualifying marks.  She also placed 6th in the 200 meters with another ECAC time of 26.91.  Sophomore Kanterman had a day of personal bests.  She place 4th in the 55 in 7.48 and followed that with an impressive 3rd place finish in the 200 meters in a time of 26.33.  Both times hit the ECAC standard.  In the weight throw, senior Caitlyn Fanning threw a season best of 12.26 meters to place 6th and gain valuable team points.  Freshmen Chelsea Bendert, Kristen Stein, and Margaret Conlon teamed with junior Janelle Bashant to do the same in the distance medley relay.  The quartet placed 7th in a time of 14:21.59

Boston University St. Valentine's Invitational - Saturday, February 10, 2007

At BU's St. Valentine's Invitational junior Kaitlin O'Sullivan once again ran an outstanding time.  She placed 8th overall in the mile, winning her heat in a time of 4:54.55 which qualified her for NCAA's automatically and broke her own school record of 5:02.16 set last year.  Less than an hour later, she came back and placed 17th in the 800 meters with an NCAA provisional time of 2:15.66.  Freshman Chelsea Bendart placed 114th in the same event with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 2:33.02.  Sophomore Melissa Kanterman placed 63rd in the 200 meters with a time of 26.64, which was a personal best and ECAC qualifying time.  She also placed 65th in the 400 with another PR of 1:00.94.  Classmate Janine Sacca placed 107th in the 200 with a time of 27.71 and 105th in the 400 with a time of 1:03.76.  Both met the SUNYAC mark.

MIT Co-Ed Invitational - Saturday, February 10, 2007

At MIT, senior Caitlyn Fanning broke her own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 12.46 meters, which improved her SUNYAC qualifying mark and placed her 11th.  Sophomore Stephanie Gordon placed 10th in the shot put with a heave of 10.11 meters.  Freshman Kristen Stein placed 6th in the 200 with a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying time of 28.46.  She also placed 4th in the 400 with a SUNYAC time of 1:03.56.  Junior Janelle Bashant placed 4th in a SUNYAC time of 9.42 in the 55 hurdles.

Syracuse University Invitational – Friday, February 2, 2007

The Red Dragons traveled to Syracuse University on Groundhog’s Day for the annual SU Invitational.  Seniors Maureen Verdier and Kaitlin O’Sullivan once again led the way.  The duo combined to qualify for ECAC’s in 5 events.  Verdier placed 2nd in the 55 dash in the time of 7.34, missing the NCAA provisional standard by .01.  She also placed 2nd in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.74.  She ran 8.67 in the semi’s for a new school record and ECAC qualifying mark.  She picked up her 3rd runner up finish of the day in running 26.65 in the 200 meters.  Sophomores Melissa Kanterman and Janine Sacca placed 3rd and 5th respectively in the 200 with Kanterman running a personal best and ECAC qualifying time of 26.73.  Sacca ran 27.69 for a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying time.  The trio teamed with O’Sullivan to win the 4x400 relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:09.39.  O’Sullivan ran away from the field to capture the women’s 1000 victory in a time of 2:53.76, winning by 9 seconds.  Her time broke her own school record of 2:54.46 set last year at SU and is currently the number one time in the ECAC.  Sophomore Melinda Dolezal placed 7th in the high jump with a leap of 1.45 meters, equaling her SUNYAC qualifying mark from December.  In the 400 meters, freshman Kristen Stein placed 10th in a time of 1:04.69, and in the 500 meters, classmate Chelsea Bendert placed 6th in a time of 1:24.16, narrowly missing the ECAC qualifying standard of 1:23.74.  Junior Janelle Bashant placed 7th in the 55 hurdles in a time of 9.71.  Sophomore Lauren Christian placed 5th in the pole vault with a leap of 2.60 meters.  Sophomore Stephanie Gordon placed 7th in both the shot put and weight throw with tosses of 10.42 and 10.44 meters respectively.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning placed 8th in the shot put with a throw of 9.81 meters.

Colgate University Class of 1932 Invitational – Saturday, January 27, 2007

O-State placed 5th out of 10 teams with 50 points.  Maureen Verdier led the way with two victories and a runner-up finish, in being named the Katie Almeter female athlete of the meet.  The senior won the 55 hurdles in an ECAC and school record time of 8.75 seconds and followed five minutes later with a win in the 55 dash in another ECAC qualifying time of 7.42.  She finished the day with a 2nd place finish in the 200 meters in a time of 27.06.  The MVP of the meet award is named for Katie Almeter, who was Colgate's top sprint recruit in the fall of 2000.  She was from Norwich, NY and was killed with her two high school best friends in a DWI accident in the fall of her freshman year.  Katie's father, Bob Almeter, was on hand to present the award to Maureen. 
This was the 3rd year in a row that Oneonta State has won the award.  Ashlee Robertson won it in 2006 while Musu Jackson-Buckner won it in 2005.  Junior Kaitlin O’Sullivan picked up the other win on the day for the Red Dragons.  She ran away with the 800 meters in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:16.11.  She also ran a leg on the 4x400 team with freshmen Chelsea Bendert and Margaret Conlon, and senior Heather Snyder.  The foursome placed 9th with a time of 4:29.50.  Bendert also qualified for SUNYAC’s in the 400 with a time of 1:05.10.  Sophomore Melissa Kanterman placed 5th in the 55 dash with a time of 7.62 and 3rd in the 200 meters with a time of 27.08.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning placed 4th in the weight throw with a SUNYAC qualifying throw of 11.95 meters.

St. Lawrence University Indoor Classic - Saturday, January 20, 2007

The Red Dragons placed 2nd with a score of 64 to 101 in a dual meet with the host Saints.  Senior Maureen Verdier led the way in winning 4 events on the day.  She opened with a win in the 55 hurdles in an ECAC qualifying time of 8.94 seconds.  She followed with wins in the 55 (7.47) and 200 (27.17) meter dashes.  She ended the day by running the lead-off leg on the victorious 4x200 meter relay team.  Sophomores Melissa Kanterman and Janine Sacca and freshman Kristen Stein teamed with Verdier for a 1:49.91 clocking.  Kanterman finished 2nd to Verdier in both dash races, with the 200 being clocked in the same time of 27.17.  Sacca finished 5th in the 200 in a time of 28.12, good enough for SUNYAC qualification, as well.  Sophomore Stephanie Gordon won the shot put with a toss of 10.97 meters.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning was 2nd with a SUNYAC qualifying throw of 10.34 meters.  Both women hit the SUNYAC mark in the weight throw with Fanning placing 4th with a toss of 11.95 meters and Gordon placing 7th with a heave of 10.52 meters.  Other event winners included freshman Chelsea Bendert in the 400 with a time of 1:06.64 and sophomore Lauren Christian in the long jump with a leap of 4.59 meters.  Junior Kaitlin O'Sullivan qualified for ECAC's in the 500 meters with a time of 1:21.24, which placed her 2nd.

New Balance NYC Gotham Cup @ NY Armory - Friday, January 12, 2007

Distance runners Kailtin O'Sullivan and Margaret Conlon traveled to New York's famed Armory to compete at the highly competitive early season New Balance Gotham Cup.  Senior O'Sullivan broke Kim Davey's school record in the 5,000 meters in running 18:09.08 and qualifying for ECAC's and placing 5th overall.  Davey set the previous school of record of 19:50.79 at the SUNYAC Championships in February of 2005.  Freshman Conlon placed 41st in a time of 12:09.67 in the 3,000 meters.

St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays – Saturday, December 9, 2006

Oneonta State traveled north to Canton, NY for the annual Saints Holidays Relays.  Sophomore Lauren Christian won the pole vault with an ECAC qualifying leap vault of 3.05 meters.  She defeated the defending SUNYAC Champion from Brockport in taking the win.  Senior Maureen Verdier won the 55 dash in a personal best and ECAC qualifying time of 7.39 seconds.  Sophomore Melissa Kanterman and Janine Sacca placed 2nd and 5th respectively in the same event with SUNYAC qualifying times of 7.68 and 7.88.  Kanterman placed 3rd in the 400 with a time of 1:02.75.  Freshman Kristen Stein placed 4th with a personal best time (by 4 seconds) of 1:03.04.  Sacca followed in 5th in a time of 1:03.21 with Verdier right behind in 6th with a time of 1:03.22.  All four times in the 400 were SUNYAC qualifiers.  The quartet also combined forces to win the 4x200 meter relay handily in an ECAC and meet record time of 1:48.48.  Junior Janelle Bashant placed 3rd in the 55 hurdles in a personal best and SUNYAC time of 9.34.  Senior Caitlyn Fanning placed 7th in the weight throw with a heave of 11.50 meters.  Sophomore Stephanie Gordon placed 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 10.90 meters.  Both throws hit SUNYAC qualifying marks.

Cornell University Relays – Saturday, December 2, 2006

The Red Dragons opened the indoor season at Cornell University’s Barton Hall in a non-scoring relay meet.  Senior Maureen Verdier qualified for the ECAC and SUNYAC Championships with a clocking of 8.03 seconds in the 60 meter dash.  It was a personal best and was good enough for 6th place.  Verdier also placed 10th in the 300 meters with a time of 43.71.  Sophomore Melissa Kanterman placed 14th and 18th, respectively in the 60 and 300 meters.  Her time of 8.31 in the 60 qualified her for SUNYAC’s and her time of 44.25 in the 300 was a personal best.  Classmate Janine Sacca was right behind in 23rd in the 300 with a personal best time of 44.75.  Another sophomore, Stephanie Gordon, broke her own school record in the shot put with a throw of 11.09 meters, which was good for a SUNYAC qualification.  It also placed her 9th overall.  Two more sophomores also hit the SUNYAC standards in their respective events.  Lauren Christian placed 11th in the pole vault with a jump of 2.85 meters while Melinda Dolezal placed 22nd in the high jump with a leap of 1.45 meters.  Junior Janelle Bashant placed 18th with a time of 10.24 seconds to qualify for SUNYAC’s in the 60 meter hurdles.
