ATLANTIC REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP @ GENESEO - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2003

Oneonta State placed 17th out of 30 teams with 485 points to finish off the 2003 season.  It was the highest place finish for the women under head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  Freshman Laura Ewald led the way in finishing 73rd in a time of 25:30 over the sloppy 6,000 meter course.  Ewald was the 4th different Red Dragon to lead the team this year.  Sophomore Maria Compson turned in a solid performance, as well, in placing 101st in a time of 25:51.  “We have laid a great foundation this year to build off,” commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “These young ladies have a bright future in this sport.  We’ll see how good we can get.”

ECAC CHAMPIONSHIP @ TUFTS FARM COURSE - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2003

Oneonta State placed higher than they ever have at ECAC's under Coach LoPiccolo in finishing 13th out of 31 teams with 338 points.  "The pack was our strength today," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "We only had 26 seconds between our 1st and 5th woman.  I am excited because 6 of our 7 runners ran personal best times."  Freshman Mallory Baughman led the way in placing 59th in a time of 25:17 over the 6,000 meter course.  Freshman Laura Ewald was right behind in 67th (25:26).  She was followed by sophomore Maria Compson in 70th (25:30) and freshmen Hilary Brosnihan in 73rd (25:34) and Melissa Wida in 82nd (25:43).

SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS @ ONEONTA - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2003

Freshman Melissa Wida placed 13th overall and earned All-SUNYAC honors in leading the Red Dragons to a 6th place finish out of 10 teams with 183 points.  Wida finished in a time of 24:36 over the 6,000 meter course at Oneonta's Fortin Town Park.  Eight points separated 6th and 9th place in the team standings.  "This was a great effort on our part," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "This was a great improvement over last year.  I am extremely proud of our young ladies.  A few points in the wrong direction could have cost us four places."  A 3 second pack time from the #2 runner to the #5 runner helped Oneonta secure their highest place finish in the SUNYAC in Coach LoPiccolo's tenure, while Wida was the first woman to make the All-SUNYAC team during that time.

Eleven out of fifteen Red Dragons ran personal or collegiate best times in placing 13th out of 20 teams with 414 points at the most competitive meet of the year.  Freshmen Melissa Wida once again led the way while running the 2nd fastest 5,000 meter time in Head Coach Matt LoPiccolo's tenure.  She placed 72nd in a time of 19:45.  The rest of the scoring top 5 were also freshmen with all of them running their season best times.  Mallory Baughman placed 101st (20:26), Kaitlin O'Sullivan was right behind in 106th (20:33), Hilary Brosnihan was 122nd (21:00), and Laura Ewald finished 128th (21:06).  Senior Christy Haynes continued her steady improvement in placing 142nd in a personal best time of 21:27.

The Red Dragons had an impressive showing in placing 5th out of 15 teams with 188 points.  “Last week, the men had their best race since I started coaching here,” commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “We challenged the women this week and they equaled the men’s performance.  I am extremely happy with our results.”  Six of the top 7 runners for O-State were freshmen.  Melissa Wida led the way in finishing 19th in a time of 19:44 over the 3 mile course.  She was followed by classmates Mallory Baughman and Laura Ewald who placed 30th and 53rd in times of 20:12 and 20:51, respectively.  Sophomore Maria Compson placed 55th in a time of 20:56 and Kaitlin O’Sullivan rounding out the scoring in placing 56th in a time of 20:57.  Amanda Villari and Kelly Marquardt were 6th and 7th for Oneonta placing 61st and 70th in times of 21:07 and 21:28, respectively.

Oneonta State placed 8th out of 13 teams with 228 points.  They were led by freshman Melissa Wida, who placed 37th in a time of 20:56 over the 5,000 meter course.  "We are very young and our learning curve is big right now," commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  "Also, the weather was not conducive to running fast times, but our ladies put in a hard effort, which is what we wanted,"   The Red Dragons' top 5 consisted of 4 freshmen.  Wida, Mallory Baughman (47th, 21:20), Kaitlin O'Sullivan (53rd, 21:28), and Laura Ewald (77th, 21:59) have made a big impact in helping top returning runner, sophomore Maria Compson (67th, 21:48).

The Red Dragons placed 2nd behind Hartwick (18-37) in a low key duel for the city of Oneonta.  O-State was led by senior Christy Haynes, who is starting to show the form she had in 2001 when she was a top 5 runner for the team.  She placed 4th in a time of 23:05 over the treacherous 3 mile course.  Haynes missed most of 2002 with an injury, but has put in a solid summer and is reacting well to this fall's training.

Oneonta State placed 3rd out of 7 teams with 80 points.  “After 1000 meters, the whole team moved up throughout the rest of the race,” commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “I was very happy with the way the women responded to the race plan.  With such a young team, it is something to build on.”  Freshman Melissa Wida led the way for the Red Dragons placing 6th overall in a time of 21:04 over the winding 5000 meter course.  She was followed by sophomore Maria Compson, who trained in Colorado all summer, in 15th place (21:40), freshmen Kaitlin O’Sullivan and Mallory Baughman in 22nd (22:05) and 23rd (22:09), respectively, and senior Jessica Tylutki in 28th (22:52).
