GOALS

One goal of this course is to demonstrate that the arts are interactive with and

influenced by economic, social, political, cultural and aesthetic forces. Another goal

is to bring students into contact with professionals who are active in the music and entertainment industry. A third goal is to suggest or to clarify personal directions and ambitions for students who are interested in the arts.

TEXT

Baskerville, David. 1995. The Music Business Handbook and Career Guide, 6th Ed.

Los Angeles: Sage Publishing Co.

FORMAT

The course is a combination of lecture/discussion sessions and guest speaker presentations. Class attendance and participation will be considered when final grades are calculated.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

"Class Participation" is defined as the timely preparation of assignments, demonstrated willingness to make positive contributions to class and mastery of assigned materials as evidenced by sensitive and imaginative questioning of guest lecturers, etc. Assignments will not be accepted after the due date.

CLASS ATTENDANCE

Attendance at all class sessions is required. Each class missed after one absence may reduce a student's grade by one letter. Students are expected to be in their seats no later than 6:00 p.m.

EVALUATION

The course will include 3 to 5 examinations, the final examination being weighted equally with the others. When calculating the final grade, I will NOT COUNT the lowest quiz grade. No "make-up" exams will be offered. There will be reciprocal evaluation. I will evaluate your performance in the traditional manner, taking into account your examination grades and class participation. A letter grade will be determined at the end of the semester using approximately the following formula:

60% examination scores

40% term projects (20% project I; 15% project II, 5% other projects and class participation)

You will be given at least one opportunity to provide written evaluation of the course including the quality of instruction. I welcome your comments and suggestions as to ways the course may be improved. You may provide such comments via signed correspondence and/or in individual conversation with me. You may also express your opinions anonymously on standard student evaluation forms.

ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

Additional assignments in the form of reading, writing or listening will be required from time to time. Assignments not completed may be cause for reducing the final grade.

NOTE

I am in frequent contact with guest speakers. In response to these communications,

I may add and/or change assignments during the semester. All times and dates are subject to change due to requirements of our guest speakers.
