GOALS
This course has been designed to help students learn about basic legal and business concepts and resources of the music and entertainment industry. Music business traditions, innovations and ethics will be studied as they relate to legal issues and business practices.
READING ASSIGNMENTS
In addition to reading assignments throughout the term, chapters will be assigned from Required Texts:
1) Halloran, Esq., Mark. 1996. The Musician's Business & Legal Guide. Revised 2nd Edition. Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632.
2) Copyright Law of the United States of America, Title 17 of the US Code (Revised to Sept. 30, 1996).
FORMAT
The course is a combination of lecture/discussion sessions, student presentations and guest speaker presentations. Class attendance and participation will be considered when final grades are calculated.
CLASS ATTENDANCE
Attendance at all class sessions is required. Each class missed after one absence (including the first class) may reduce a student's grade by one letter. Students should be in their seats no later than 1:00 p.m.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
"Class Participation" is defined as the timely preparation of assignments, demonstrated willingness to make positive contributions to class and mastery of assigned materials as evidenced during class discussion, sensitive and imaginative questioning of guest lecturers, etc.
EVALUATION
The course will include four examinations and at least one student presentation. Four to seven "hard copy" written assignments will also be required and there will be an email component, as well. No one is exempt from any assignment and assignments will not be accepted past their due date. When calculating the final grade for the course, I will NOT COUNT the lowest quiz grade, and no ìmake-upî quizzes will be given. I will evaluate your performance in the traditional manner, taking into account your assignments, examination grades and class participation. A letter grade will be determined at the end of the semester using approximately the following formula:
48% examination scores
52% student presentations, participation and written projects
PLEASE NOTE: Quizzes will be in two parts. The first part of the quiz will refer to our text, my lectures and any other assignments we may have had. The second part of the quiz will refer to guest lecturer comments. You may consult your class notes during the quiz ONLY for this second part of the quiz.
You will be given at least one opportunity to provide written evaluation of the course including the quality of instruction. I welcome your comments and suggestions as to ways the course may be improved. You may provide such comments via signed correspondence and/or during individual conversations with me.
ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS
Additional assignments in the form of reading, writing or listening will be required.
NOTE - I am in frequent contact with guest speakers. In response to these communications, I may add and/or change assignments during the semester. All times and dates are subject to change due to guest speaker requirements.
