Dr. Ryburn earned his B.S. from Southwestern Oklahoma State
University in 1998, and his Ph.D. in Plant Science from the
Oklahoma State University in 2003 under the direction of
Ronald J. Tyrl. He has been teaching in the Biology
at Oneonta State College since 2004.
As a
plant taxonomist, the focus of his research is the
classification and identification of plants. His current and
future research evolves constructing an accurate, up-to-date
record of the vouchered plant species from underreported
counties of New York State. He has also started
working with other state botanists to construct a Flora
of New York State.
He
is
the Curator of the SUNY-Oneonta Herbarium (SUCO) which houses
over 10,000 plant and fungal specimens from upstate New York.
The SUNY-Oneonta Herbarium is quickly becoming one of the most
significant herbaria in this region. Recently completed projects
like the Flora of Otsego County and Flora of
Montgomery County have added over 1,000 specimens to our
herbarium in a little over a year. With ongoing projects like
the Flora of Fulton County, and anticipated projects
like the Flora of Franklin County,
and Vouchered Specimens of Invasive Plant Species of New York
State, the importance of the SUNY-Oneonta herbarium will
unquestionably grow.
In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Ryburn is the faculty
advisor for the very active
Biology Club,
and Beta Beta Beta (a national Biological honor society), and the Presiding Officer of the
Faculty and Chair of the
College Senate.
He also sets on the Board of Directors of the
New York Flora Association.
He also
enjoys cooking, camping, hiking, and working with Habitat for Humanity. He is married
to his lovely wife Maranda, and they have
one son, Addison, and one
daughter, Madalyn.
