Mold-Making and Casting

Illustrated step by step instructions on mold making and wax casting.

The typical assignment asks the students to choose a simple everyday object in order to create a 2-part mold from it out of plaster.Once the mold is complete, cast your object in a material of your choice.

Choose and object that is fairly symmetrical and with a smooth texture for your first cast. Fruits and some vegetables are ideal for casting, as well as industrial everyday objects.

Check with your instructor before you begin. It is also advised that you come to class with 3 to 5 objects so you have alternatives.

You may cast more than one object if you wish.

Some Materials for casting:

  • Plaster
  • Clay
  • Paraffin Wax (buy it at the grocery store. You can find it in the canned goods)
  • Beeswax
  • Papier-mâché
  • Casting Rubber
