 Transformation through Material Properties

INSTRUCTIONS

Choose a basic shape and build it in the third dimension four times, out of four different materials.
The materials you can use are:

1. Wire to create a “wire frame” of the shape
2. Chicken Wire (or “hardware cloth”) to create a “hollow construction” form
3. Cardboard
4. Anything you want (be creative)

Observe how you have to adjust the design of the shape in order to accommodated the properties of the materials you employ.
The shape must be at lease two feet large, and it can be either abstract or representational.

Materials:

o Plaster
o Chicken wire (or hardware cloth)
o Plaster gauzes (available at the bookstore). Alternately, you can use “cheese cloth” that you can dip into plaster. You can cheese cloth it at a fabric store, or at Wal-Mart.
o Wire (any kind would do, but our college store sells aluminum “armature” wire coils).
o Cardboard (use foam-core if you have it, otherwise any cardboard would do)

Examples

One example from an old student. It's not perfect, but a good try.

Example of cardboard construction. Not the best craftsmanship, but note the ways cardboard has been cut, and scored to accommodate the shape.
