Introduction to Computer Art

Page layout : cover

What you will learn:

How to combine text and images.

How to plan and create a variety of artwork for a project wiht diverse needs (images, graphics, type).

How to create art that catches the eye

How to analyze publications and graphics.

How to create a page layout.

What to do:

Use images and text to recreate the cover of your favorite magazine.

Use the magazine's format in a way that everyone will be able to tell what magazine that is, but invent the theme, the images and the text.

One example of a cover would be Time magazine's Man of the year. You could use the magazine's format (find a time magazine and study it) and name, but insert your own face as the man/woman of the year.

You may create the "Time, man/woman of the year" cover, although MAD magazine man of the year could be more fun. Or better yet, make everything up (the magazine, the layout, the theme, and the images).

You shoud use your very own images. It is hard to create original art with other people's artwork.

You can use Adobe inDesign or QuarkXpress or Adobe Illustrator to put together the images and the text.
Use Adobe Photoshop to create your images.
Use Adobe Illustrator to create the text.

Images:
Make sure all the images you use are scanned at 150dpi. Do not use downloaded images. Create all the graphics from scratch.

What NOT to do:
Do not use only Photoshop to create the whole cover. The idea is to be able to learn how to combine a variety of files from different programs together.

Bring to class the magazine which you plan to emulate, so you can refer to its layout. You should also create a rough pencil drawing of the layout

Pay attention to the entire format and the fonts used by the original magazine.

If you do not have magazines at home, our library has a great variety of them. If you cannot check them out, make a photocopy of the cover and bring it to class for reference.
