Introduction to Computer Art

Assignment: Signs

Create 4 signs without any text for the following:

1. Airplane
2. Blimp
3. Human
4. Dolphin

Create each sign in a separate file (to create a new file: File>New).

Keep the sizes at 2 inches square for each sign.

Perform all the tutorials found on the right colums, especially "creating curves"

Total Files Due: 4 (Four) (Saved in Illustrator (ai) format)

Notes:

Use Adobe Illustrator to create your signs, and you should be using the pen tool almost exclusively so you can get used to it.

If you missed the lecture on vector graphics and paths, you are encouraged to read the Illustrator help topics regarding the "pen" and the "selection" tools, as it will be very hard to follow the class for the next few weeks.

There is nothing intuitive about using the Pen tool to create paths. You really need to practice a great deal before you can master the art of path-making.

As an artist/designer you will often be called to translate spoken concepts to visual language that is clear and concise.
Signs provide us with vital information in our every day affairs, and as the world becomes smaller thorough information technology and easy means of traveling, they become increasingly important. In fact over the last 20 years signs have taken the place of a universal language. Your ability to be able to conceive, and to communicate ideas in a visual way is one of the most important skills you can develop.

Think of the signs that you are familiar with, but do not try to copy them. Remember that they are someone else's design. Try to create an original idea while still trying to convey the message of the sign in an efficient manner. Be creative and invent your own forms to convey the messages.

What you will learn

  • How to create Vector graphics
  • How to use your creative skills to communicate visually
  • How to reduce concepts to their absolute visual essentials
  • How to be creative while communicating in an absolute minimal language
