Graphic/ Publication Design

Assignment: Poster

Congratulations, you have been hired to create the visual identity for the "Shadow Packaging Company."
This company has invented a process that allows for capturing and containing shadows. It is in desperate need of a complete graphics solution that would create a visual identity for its products and services.

Create a folder, name it As5 yourlastname, copy your finished work in it, and copy it into the Graphic Design Drop Box.


Your folder is due at the beginning of the class on due date, and must contain the following:

  • A company logo
    it must be scalable, and it can contain up to four colors.
    • Save one Illustrator file
    • Save one 4" x 4" TIF (named yourlastname_identity_logo.tif)
    • Save one JPG copy 400 x 400 px (named yourlastname_identity_logo.jpg)

  • A 16" x 16" Poster Design with the following required elements:
      • a large photograph or graphic (or a series of photographs or graphics) that captures the essence of "shadow catching"
      • The company logo
      • Contact Information
      • One full paragraph (5 complete sentences) that describe shadow catching in interesting ways
    • save one TIF file (named yourlastname_identity_poster.tif file)
    • Save one JPG copy 400 x 400 px (named yourlastname_identity_poster.jpg)
  • A two-page spread containing an advertisement introducing the company
    • Save one PDF, and one inDesign file ( named yourlastname_identity_spread)
  • A Box Design for the shadow containers.
    It can be a nicely rendered drawing, a descriptive illustration, a 3D rendering, a 3D animation, or an actual prototype of the container.

You must use more than one program to execute the above

Submit Files Checklist:

  1. Logo Illustrator file
  2. Logo TIFF file (4" x 4")
  3. Logo JPEG file (400 x 400 px)
  4. Poster TIFF (16" x 16")
  5. Poster JPEG (400" x 400")
  6. Two-page spread inDesign (8.5" x 11")
  7. Two-page spread PDF (8.5" x 11")
  8. Box design (file depended on the applications you utilize)

You must use more than one program to execute the above

Use any program and any technique you feel comfortable with to execute the above requirements, but be wise and use the appropriate application for the appropriate design

Using Images
(Photographs, Illustrations, Pictographs, Symbols)

1 -2 Realism (reflecting lifestyle) Picture telling a story through the point of view and the individual elements.

3 Less clear, more seductive (still realistic)

4 Photomontage. Creating a new reality and telling a story with images.

5 - 6 - 7 - 8 Process and its effect on design. Realistic hand-drawn images. Etching (engraving) on metal plate. Image created entirely of lines. Lithography: process allows for gradations of gray.

9 -10 -11 -12 Stylization of images. Eliminating detail and enhancing the graphic quality of an image

13 - 14 -15 - 16 - 17 Using Pictographs and Symbols and Ideograms. Direct communication through the bare essentials. Reducing an image to its absolute essence in order to communicate as a universal language. Symbols represent abstract ideas
