Guided walking tour of Florence, leather-making demonstrations, Piazza Della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, and the Duomo.  There usually is not much free time during this, but may be a little depending on the train times.

The train ride from Rome to Florence lasts 2:30 each way (fast train makes in half the time).

The Uffizi hosts some of the most important Rennaissance Art in the world.

Free time in Rome suggestions:

Spend the day at the beach (take the metro to Ostia and find the beach called Stella Polare)

Or, visit Trastevere for some food and photography

Pompeii to Brindisi is about five hours by bus.

We will sail by ferry from Brindisi (or Bari) to Patra overnight. The trip takes about 16 hours.

3-DAY TOUR EXTENSION:

Greek island cruise:

We will travel to Pireas (about 20 minutes from the center of Athens) to board the cruise ship.

(Itinerary will be confirmed 14 days before departure)

If the ship docks in Mykonos (as opposed to anchor), everyone should sign up for the shuttle service (8 Euro) to go into town.

Bus/Walking tour ( € 42), by bus, 3 hours

Recommendation:
Don't sign up

We will spend the time walking the beautiful streets, photographing, and relaxing.

Day 11

Tour 1: Ephesus & the House of the Virgin Mary (€ 62), 3.5 hours

Recommendation:
ARTH students sign up for the Ephesus excursion if you want. (Thomás will sign up for one of the Ephesus excursions).

Optionally, you can enjoy a walk around Kusadasi. Do some photography, shopping, and swimming at the beach.

Optional Excursion:
The Palace of Knossos by bus (€ 56 Euros), by bus, 3 hours.

Recommendation:
Don't sign up

We will walk around Heraklion, do photography, and we'll visit the Archaeological Museum instead.

Optional Excursion 2:
Santorini sailing & volcano (€ 53) • By
caique / motorcoach • 3 ½ hours

Recommendation:
This is an interesting excursion and Thomás will probably sign up (not sure yet). Do your own research and decide if you want to do this excursion. It includes swimming in the hot springs but there is no real beach there. If swimmig is what you want, you might be better off swimming in one of the swimming pools in Fira (free for patrons who just buy a dring or coffee) and the views would be unforgettable. Discuss this option with Thomás before you sign up.

Day 13

Return to Piraeus and transfer to the airport.

SAFETY

No need to be paranoid or to look for threats and dangers everywhere. First, remember that the world is a wonderful place, full of wonderful people. Be alert so you don't become the subject of crime, accident, or illness, but don't be paranoid to the point where you can't enjoy your journey.

  • Don't wear expensive-looking clothes or jewelry.
  • Don't walk around alone; stay with your group or several friends.
  • Stick to the main thoroughfares.
  • Be aware of your purse/wallet and keep it in a safe place, especially in areas with a lot of tourists.
  • Keep your money in a safe place at all times. Travel pouches that you wear under your clothes are recommended.
  • Keep important phone numbers with you, including the hotel's and the EF emergency number.
