Both words mean "to be", but in different ways.
SER is used for:
- definition
- ¿Qué es la tarea? (What is the HW?)
La tarea, como siempre, es estudiar vocabulario. (The HW, as
always, is to study vocabulary.)
- identification
- ¿Cuál es el mejor programa de televisión? (What is the best television program?)
Es Firefly,
¡claro! (It's Firefly, of course!)
- telling time
- ¿A qué hora es la clase? (What time is class?)
Es a las nueve, desafortunadamente. (It's at nine,
unfortunately.)
- describing essential characteristics
- ¿Cómo es la clase? (What is the class like?)
Es divertida. (It's fun.)
ESTAR is used for:
- location
- ¿Dónde está su oficina? (Where is your
office?)
Está en el edificio Schumacher, número
306C. (It's in Schumacher Hall, number 306C.)
- describing relative or temporary conditions
- ¿Cómo está la profesora? (How is the
professor?)
Está cansada de pintar la casa. (She's tired of painting the house.)
