The Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) operated in Oneonta, NY from 1881 till early 1950s.
The gas it produced was used for street lighting, and heating and cooking.
Different types of wastes (coal tar, purifier waste, etc.) created during
the gas manufacturing, resulted in intense soil and groundwater contamination.
The site of the former MGP is now located in Neahwa Park, next to Damaschke baseball
field in the City of Oneonta. At present time, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG)
conducted on site excavation and removal of contaminated materials.
This Web site was established as a group project for GEOL 201 Environmental Geology
class at the SUNY College at Oneonta in Spring of 2007. The purpose
of this project was to study environmental impact of former MGP site,
and legal and engineering aspects of its remediation.
