Instructions for website reviews.

Walter vom Saal

These instructions are intended to be used with the website review form.

1. Based on specific course requirements, locate one or more websites (see hints below).

2. For each website you review, fill out this sheet plus any other information required for the particular course.  Submit one copy and keep another copy for your records.

3. You may fill in this form by printing it and writing on it directly, or you may use a word processor (use Edit, Select All, Copy, then open a new document in your word processor and use Edit, Paste Special, Unformatted Text, then save the document, then edit it and insert text).

4. In certain courses I am preparing a handout on websites related to the course topic.  At the present time I am doing this for the course on aging [websites on aging] and the course on sexuality [under development].  If you have found a website that you believe should be included in that list, please include a paragraph in your review that says this:

"I recommend that this website be added to the general list of websites on the topic of [aging] [human sexuality].  Below is a brief description appropriate for the website."  Follow this with a brief description in the format of the existing handout.  At the end of that paragraph, put EITHER "review contributed by [your name], [date]" OR, if you wish to remain anonymous, "[student review], [date]."

If I believe that the review is appropriate for the handout, I will add it to the handout.

Hints for locating websites.

1. In some cases, websites are listed in your text or in a CD that came with your text.

2. To search the internet, use a search engine.  There are many search engines and many types of search engine.  “Meta-search engines” use a number of other search engines at once and report the combined results.  One way to find some search engines is to go to the library home page, then click on Search Engines (under Search the Internet).  Before you begin, click on searching tips at the top of the library's search engine page and read the guidelines.

3. Pay attention to how many hits you get.  Often there are thousands.  If there are too many, add some additional words to narrow your search.
