Title: Preliminary report of literature review
Date assigned: 10/7/04
Date due: 10/14/04
Minimum pages: 1
Maximum pages: 2

Description:

1. Search for professional psychological literature on the topic or topics you have chosen or have been assigned. You should attempt to find two sources relevant to the topic. Each source you find can be an article, book chapter, or book on the topic. I will use the term "resource" to refer to an article, book chapter, or book you found. In some of the instructions below, I use the term "article" since most of you will be finding articles, but you should understand that when I refer to an article it can also be a chapter or a book.

2. Make notes about how you did your search. We will compare notes in class to help each other out on this task. Bring your notes to class on the day this assignment is due.

3. You may search in the library or on line.

4. Here are some preliminary hints for searching on line.

A. Go to SUCO home page > Milne Library > Academic Search. Choose Advanced Search and Keyword Search. Enter the term or terms you are looking for. Under the Advanced Search tab, select Publication Type = Periodical and also select Document Type = Article. Click the Databases tab and check PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES.

B. From the home page of Milne Library, you also can click on Search Engines > Search Engines by Discipline > Psychogy to get to PsychCrawler, the APA search engine.

C. From the home page of Milne Library, you also can click on Core List > Complete List > Complete List/Library Resources Listed By Subject > Psychology, and you will see a list of 14 search engines that are frequently used in Psychology.

5. Write up and submit a one- or two-page summary of your literature review. The review begin by stating the topic you searched for, and then should identify two resources (articles or chapters or books) you have found that are relevant to your topic. At least one of the two must be from a professional site such as PsychLIT or PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, or PsycCrawler. Organize your report as follows, and NUMBER each paragraph:

1. A single paragraph identifying what your were searching for and how you went about conducting your search.
2. For your first article or resource, a single brief paragraph that gives a brief summary of the article. This summary paragraph should include one sentence that contains a correct APA style citation of the article. (EXAMPLE: I read an article by Jones (1973) that described research showing that dogs are happier than cats. The research examined....)
3. A brief paragraph that gives your reactions and/or comments to that article. This can be just a single sentence, or more if you like.
4. For your second article or resource, a single brief paragraph that gives a brief summary of the article. This summary paragraph should include one sentence that contains a correct APA style citation of the article.
5. A brief paragraph that gives your reactions and/or comments to that article. This can be just a single sentence, or more if you like.

6, 7, 8 etc. After the introductory paragraph and the two paragraphs on each article (five paragraphs total), you may write more information or comments if you choose - this is optional - but you should not exceed the two-page limit for this assignment.

At the end of the written material, write the title REFERENCES and give complete, correct APA format references for each of the two resources you cited.

6. If you are not sure of the difference between a citation and a reference, please be sure to look it up in the textbook.
