Before or during the break, interview 8 people individually or in groups: 2 young females, 2 young males, 2 older females, 2 older males. ("Young" means ages 15-25, "older" means older than older than age 35.) Ask them:

1. What do you think are the two or three most important guidelines for a successful long term romantic relationship?

2. What do you think are the two or three most important guidelines for good communication?

3. Do you think there are any male/female differences in communication? (Note: in preparation for this question, and your own thinking about it, see the handout on Gender Differences in Communication Styles.)

After completing the interviews, write a two-page informal report on what you found. Also describe your own views very briefly. In your two-page paper, you may be selective and describe only the most significant or interesting things you found. Your paper does not need to be a comprehensive report of every question you asked and every answer you received, nor does it need to describe in complete detail all your thoughts on each question! It does need to show that you carried out the interviews, reflected on the most significant things you learned, and tried to put into words your own thoughts about some of these issues. You might choose in your paper to focus your discussion on just a subset of this assignment that you found of particular interest.
