Psyc 294: Homework #1
Title: Getting started.
Date assigned: Thursday 1/20/05
Date due: Tuesday 1/25/05
Minimum pages: 1
Maximum pages: 2

Description:

1. Read the syllabus on the web, print out a copy, and bring it to the next class. Jot down any questions you have about the syllabus. Be prepared for a quiz on the syllabus. You do not need to know details such as exact numbers of points. You should know generally what is required. (Is there a mid-term? Final exam? Quizzes?) Also read carefully the section on what HEADING is required on all papers.

2. Print the "schedule of dates and topics" on the website and bring it to the next class. Come to class with your preferences for meeting dates.

3. Think about the topics you would like covered in this class, and come to class with a list of your five highest priorities. To help you in this process, you may want to review the course document titled "possible topics to cover," which is also on the web. You are not required to print that out; it may change.

4. Write a nice, neat, well-prepared document of no more than two pages on the following topic: My Goals for This Class. In the first paragraph, briefly describe your current status, including your year in school, number of credits completed, number of psychology courses completed. In the second paragraph, briefly describe your current thoughts about your career or graduate school goals. In the remainder of the paper, you can expand on the previous material if you like, and then devote the rest of your paper to your thoughts about what you want to get out of this course, and how you would like to go about doing that. A major purpose of this paper is to offer you the opportunity to help me learn a little more about you. You also may take this opportunity to offer any ideas, reflections, or suggestions about the course that you would like.

Take this initial assignment as an opportunity to try out some of the skills you will need to successfully pursue your career goals. Read the instructions carefully, follow them precisely, and produce a product that you will feel good about! HINT: Read the syllabus carefully BEFORE you write your homework assignment!
