Biases and Discrimination Against the Elderly.

The table below gives examples of bias and discrimination based on age that have come up in class discussions.  Some of these examples may be generally true, while others may depend on the individual.  Also note that some of these examples may depend on the laws of particular states or localities, and some may depend on the particular culture (e.g. United States vs. other countries, etc.)

- forgive child for misbehavior.

 

- men pay higher car insurance.

 

- youthful offender status = briefer prison sentence.

 

 

- can't get hired.

 

laws:

- parental permission reqd for employment, marriage, etc.

- can't watch X-rated movie, can't drink, can't buy beer, cigarettes.

- City curfew laws.

- discounts: theater tickets, concerts,

shopping days, restaurants.

- Social security is available.

- Treated kindly: give seat on bus, act more forgiving of flaws, problems.

 

respected, retirement (more time for grandchildren/family, hobbies, traveling), 

talkative, outgoing, senior groups.

- life insurance: cost, availability.

- Must re-apply for driver's license.

- Medical system treats less vigorously.

 

job discrimination, ignored, treated disrespectfully because of loss of hearing and poor eyesight, misunderstood, problems with new technology, low income, put in nursing homes, overgeneralization and stereotyping of the elderly.

 

NOTE on laws: look up the age discrimination act in your textbook.  Find out about (a) what ages it covered initially, and (b) changes that expanded the ages covered.
