Comparisons of dog from 2002 season (Feature 483) with dog from 1989 (Feature 3).

The first dog recovered from Dust Cave was in 1989 during excavation of test unit A (Figure 3). The dog burial was encountered at approximately 70 cmbd and one-half meter east of a human burial (Feature 2), in what was probably the Seven Mile Island phase of the site (6,000-5,200 rcybp). This dog was analyzed by Morey (1994). Morey's analysis compared the "Dust Cave Dog" with dogs from other sites in Alabama. Comparisons between the "Dust Cave Dog" and other prehistoric Alabama dogs (Haag 1948) indicate that the dog from Dust Cave was small, but well within the size range for dogs at that time (Morey 1994:165).
