Dog 2 (Feature 492) from 2002 Season
|
On July 26, 2002 a second dog burial (Feature 492)was encountered. Unfortunately, this specimen was not as complete as the first dog skeleton of the season (Feature 483). Feature 492 had the cranium and left mandible missing, as well as the lower arm bones, and lower leg bones (Figure 1). However, the elements that were there were articulated and in very good condition. A biface and several bone tools were recovered with this specimen (Figure 2). This specimen was measured in a similar manner to Feature 483 in comarison to the dog excavated in the 1989 season. Two things are important to note about the dog from Feature 492. First, this dog was a slightly older individual than the earlier two (Features 3 and 483). The dog from Feature 492 was probably over 4 years of age given the wear on the dentition, the first two were between 2-4 years of age. Second, this dog seems to exhibit marked damage to the vertebral column, particularly the thoracic and lumbar vertebra (Figure 3). This was also noted on Feature 483, but Feature 492 had more obvious damage, with a probable break on the fifth lumbar vertebra. |
