General Information for 2007 Field School

Pine Lake

  1. Facility Fee:    $265.67

  2. Based on a total-Hartwick and SUCO combined-number of 15 students enrolling.  If more students enroll, the fee will be lower and vice versa.

  3. A down payment of $50.00 is due May 1st, payable to Pine Lake.

 Location:

                   Hartwick’s Pine Lake Environmental Campus.  1894 Charlotte Creek Road, near Davenport Center, Delaware County, NY.  It is about 8 miles (~15 min. by car) from the Hartwick main campus. Arrival (if you are staying at Pine Lake):

Between 3-4 pm (absolutely no later than 4 pm), Sunday June 3.  Park in the main lot.  Upon arrival, go to the Robertson Lodge (the big white building next to the parking lot).

You will be responsible for your own meals, but the kitchen will be available for your use.

You are responsible for getting yourself to/from Pine Lake.

You may leave the morning of July 4th, 2007. 

 

Lodging:
If you choose housing at Pine Lake, you will be housed in the Robertson Lodge (2nd floor).  All rooms are shared (most doubles, some triple or quads).  Beds are twin-sized, either single or bunk beds.  All rooms have dorm-style built-in closets, dresser.  You will be able to lock your room door.  There are two bathrooms (showers, sinks and toilets) on the second floor (these are for our use only).

Phone:

There is no private phone service.  There is a public pay phone on the first floor of Robertson Lodge; the phone number for it is: 607-278-6399.  If someone wants to leave you a message, they can call the Pine Lake office at 607-278-5429.  In case of emergency, you can be contacted via 1) Peter Blue (resident manager) at his house on the Pine Lake campus 607-278-5211 or 2) by calling the Hartwick College switchboard at 607-431-4000, ask for the emergency on-call administrator.

 What to Bring:  The Necessities…

bulletCanteen or water bottle.
bulletSturdy boots or shoes with good grips for field work (preferably 2 pairs).  AVOID shoes with heavily lugged soles, as they can destroy the floor of excavation units. 
bulletWork gloves.
bulletSunscreen, sunhat, bandanna, sunglasses.
bulletInsect repellent.
bulletOld clothes to work in; the mud stains most clothes permanently. Bring several pairs of long pants as well as shorts.  Consider long-sleeved shirts for layering, sun/insect protection.
bulletRain gear
bulletBackpack/day pack (to carry your lunch, water bottles, field gear, etc. to the site).
bulletLightweight coat/sweatshirt/parka, can be cool at night.

If you are staying at Pine Lake:

bulletRegular clothes for evening/weekends.

 

Pine Lake Living (for those staying at Pine Lake)

Kitchen/Food:

Food can be stored in the kitchen of the Lodge.  You will be responsible for making sure the kitchen and any items used from the kitchen are clean after use.

Students have access to the lodge kitchen and cooperative use of the three refrigerators there, two kitchen ranges and dishwasher. Cleaning stoves and the fridge is their job. Buying food, organizing how or even whether to cooperatively shop is their job. They are welcome to work in, and eat from, the little lodge garden.

Garbage and recycling is the responsibility of the students. PL staff can empty garbage daily; if it needs emptying more often they must tell us. Keeping swept floors, counters, and dishes is the responsibility of the students. We will mop when needed.

If the students do not clean according to our standards they will receive a warning. If they receive two warnings, they are evicted. Any damage incurred they are charged.

Bathrooms cleaned daily and supply toilet paper, but not soap or paper towels upstairs in Robertson Lodge. The upstairs area is treated as a personal effects space for rentals.

·        Each person is responsible for bringing a lunch for the field, we only break for half an hour and there is not time to travel someplace to get food for lunch. 

·        On lab nights, there will be a one hour break for dinner.  You can either bring your own dinner or leave for dinner and come back in time for lab.

Laundry:

·        If you are staying at Pine Lake, each person is responsible for doing their own laundry.  There are pay machines in the Lodge that are available at all times.  If the Pine Lake manager feels the machines are overused (stressing the septic system), a maximum number of loads per day may be imposed or students may be asked to use town laundry facilities.

The Robertson Lodge:

·        The first floor has a communal living room, dining room and kitchen that we will be sharing with students from another course running concurrently with ours (they are housed elsewhere, but have access to the communal rooms in the lodge).  There are also public bathrooms, an art gallery, and the Pine Lake main office on the 1st floor.

·        Living room has a TV.

·        One computer with internet access.  

Other Amenities at the Pine Lake campus:

·        Swimming (lake).

·        Canoes, kayaks, rowboats available.

·        Fishing is permitted in accordance with NYS regulations.

·        Multiple hiking trails.

Some Important Pine Lake Rules:

·        Quiet hour is every night from 10PM until 7AM.

·        Alcohol is NOT permitted on the grounds, but people over 21 may have alcohol in their rooms.

·        The swimming area is open ONLY when lifeguards are on duty.  The swimming area may be closed during swimming lessons and some camp activities.
