Homework #9
Title: Preliminary data analysis of Niceness and Happiness pilot study.
Date assigned: Thu 10/16/03
Date due: Thu 10/30/03 Tues 11/4/03
Minimum pages: 1
Maximum pages: 2

Description:

1. Make a copy of the data from the pilot study that was gathered in class. (Click here for the data, and then save it under a different file name so you can play with it.)

2. Re-calculate the two means and t-test we did in class (female mean happiness score, male mean happiness score, and t-test of significance of the difference between those means). These should appear on the spreadsheet somewhere different from where they were originally, along with a label that indicates what they are - just as we did in class.

3. Re-calculate the correlation we did in class (correlation between overall happiness score and overall niceness score for all individuals in the class. This recomputed correlation should appear on the spreadsheet somewhere different from where the original one was, along with a label that indicates what it is - just as we did in class.

4. Compute one new set of means and do a t-test on the significance of the difference between those means. Show this somewhere on the spreadsheet, along with appropriate labels indicating what they are.

5. Compute one new correlation and look up the statistical significance of the correlation. (The spreadsheet with the data on it has a link to a website that will allow you to look up the statistical significance of the correlation you compute.) Show the correlation and its significance somewhere on the spreadsheet, along with appropriate labels indicating what they are.

6. Print out a copy of the spreadsheet with all this on it. Write your name and the rest of the standard heading at the top. CIRCLE each of the items indicated in red above, so I can see where they are. You also may hand-write on the spreadsheet any explanatory information that is necessary for me to understand what you did.

7. NOTE: You may work with others on this homework in order to help each other learn to use Excel. However, EACH individual in the class should submit a different data analysis and EACH individual should submit his or her own homework.
