Psyc 257 Advocacy Projects
fall 2005

1. What do I mean by advocacy? Goal: work toward change in some area of interest to you.

2. All students should print out the guidelines for effective group work from my website, and discuss these guidelines as a group.

3. Suggestions regarding advocacy projects:

a. The goal of your project should be clearly articulated.

b. The tactics should be clearly identified and described.

c. You should effectively make a case for some change you believe is desirable.

d. Most importantly, you must do more than educate your classmates. You must initiate some action that takes positive steps to encourage and advocate for the change you seek.

e. There should be some data & research on the topic that support the action or position you advocate.

f. There should be some references to resources (journal articles, books, websites) containing further information on the topic.

Action possibilities include (but are not limited to):

make and put up posters
talk to an official at your school
talk to an official in your town or city
petition (signed and mailed)
surveys
interviews
education
flyers
handouts

make and publicize aweb page
make and present a video
PSA = public service announcement on WONY
get a law passed
bring a motion to the College Senate
work through Student Association
letters to legislators
letters to school board members
letters to the editor of local newspapers

5. Group presentation. The group presentation will be made during one of the final four class periods. During the group presentation, you have two central requirements:

A. Clearly present your goal and the arguments for it. This should include data and supporting information. It should also include relevant background information so that your audience understands the current situation that has led you to advocate for your goal.

B. Clearly describe your advocacy efforts. What did you do, and (if you can measure it), how successful were you?

6. Group Advocacy Project Report. See a separate document describing the required group advocacy project written report.
