Proposal Essay (#3):  assigned.

Wednesday, March 14

Hey everyone,

I seem to have gotten that stomach bug that's going around. I considered driving 45 minutes into Oneonta to meet with you all for 75 minutes, then driving the 45 minutes back home and ... well, I decided against it for reasons of sanitation and sanity.

However, I'm giving you some assignments to do that we would have done in class today. I expect you to complete them, bring them to class next Monday when we'll go over them, and you'll hand them in. You will not receive credit (2% of  your total grade) if you don't complete these and turn them in on Monday.

Here's the deal:
  1. Today in class, we were going to go over information on writing proposals. You should have read assigned parts of Chapter 7 in preparation for today. Be sure you read those pages before next Monday.
  2. Also in class today, I was going to have you brainstorm ideas for your upcoming Proposal Essay. I want you to complete the exercises on "Generating Ideas" on pp. 260 - top of 263. In your reading, I especially want you to focus on the material from pp. 260 - bottom 266.
  3. Finally, in class we were going to go over how to pare your writing down by eliminating wordiness. Print out and read the Conciseness: Methods of Eliminating Wordiness at http://www.wc.edu/success/files/uplink/Conciseness_Methods_of_Eliminating_Wordiness.pdf. Print out and complete the wordiness exercise at http://www.augustana.edu/users/Remann/WRITING/Exercise.htm. Bring these to class with you to hand in on Monday, Mar. 19.

I know this may sound like a lot, but it shouldn't take you more than the 75 minutes we would have spent in class today.

Here is a reminder and information about essay assignments:

  1. Final draft of your movie review proposal is due by 9 pm on Friday, March 16. Post a copy in mycomplab and attach a copy to an email to me. If you need more feedback from me, I will be at the library all day tomorrow (I'm hoping this really is a 24 hour bug).
  2. I've attached your next essay assignment. The first draft of this proposal essay will be due next Wednesday, March 21 in class. Please bring a print copy.

See you next Monday!

Kay Benjamin
