Sept 4 : Introductory Class
Sept. 11: review images of Minoan and Mycenaean Art.
Sept. 18: Read Osborne, pp. 23-67 in preparation for our examination of Greek Geometric and Orientalizing Art. Review images on pages dedicated to Geometric Vase Painting, Geometric Architecture, and Geometric Sculpture. In considering the vases, try to articulate evidence for the development of the vases.
Sept. 25: For the Orientalizing period, consider the pages dedicated to Vase Painting, Architecture, Greek Orders and Parts of the Temple, and Sculpture. Read the excerpt from Homer's Odyssey and use it to try to articulate attitudes during the Orientalizing period.
October 2: Read Osborne, pp. 69-85: Archaic Art I: we will examine the creation of monumental stone sculpture in the form of the nude, standing male figure, the Kouros (pl. kouroi) and the femal counterpart, the kore figure. Review webpages entitled Archaic Sculpture, and Archaic Sculpture II: Kore. Time permitting we will turn to Archaic Architecture.
October 9: Read Osborne, pp. 87-155: Archaic Art II: a principal focus of the class will be the development of Archaic Greek Vase Painting. Read Osborne, pp. 157-174: Early Classical Art: the focus of the class will be on the radical transformation of the human figure in Early Classical Art.
October 16: we will continue our discussion of Early Classical Art. Pay attention to vase painting, particularly the Niobid Krater. A major monument from this period is the Temple of Zeus of Olympia. We will also examine the Doryphoros of Polykleitos.
October 23: First Seminar: The Parthenon. Details of the seminar are explained on a page entitled Mid-Term Project: The Parthenon.
October 30: we will continue the Parthenon seminar. You will notice that I have supplemented the images focusing on the East Pediment on the Gallery Page. Try to reconstruct the pediment with the pieces I have given you. We will go on to discuss later fifth century Athenian monuments including the Erechtheum and the Nike figures from the parapet of the Temple of Athena Nike.
November 6: Late Classical of the Fourth Century. Review webpage dedicated to the Late Classical. Aphrodite of Knidos.
November 13: We will examine Hellenistic Art and go on to begin an examination of Roman art with a discussion of Roman Republican Art. Read the chapter in the Ramage and Ramage book on Roman Art dedicated to Roman Republican art: 4th edition, Chapter 2, pp. 61-99.. Roman Portraiture. Note that I have changed my plan that I mentioned last night by including an introduction to Roman art. This will allow us to catch up some.
November 27: Second Seminar: Art and Architecture of the Age of Augustus. Ramage and Ramage, 4th edition, pp. 101-131 (Chapter 3: Augustus and the Imperial Idea).
December 4: Roman Architecture. See also the webpage entitled Roman Architecture/Roman Power. Review sections on architecture in the various chapters of Ramage and Ramage: pp. 61-73; 101-110; 150-155; 157-162; 193-198; 213-231
December 11: for an introduction to Roman Imperial iconography see the page dedicated to the Panels of Marcus Aurelius.
Third Paper: due during the Finals Week: Tuesday, December 18, at 5:30.
