Monday, September 29:we will examine probably the most famous symbol of Greek culture the temple dedicated to the goddess Athena in Athens, the Parthenon. Read Gardner, 13th edition, pp. 126-137; 12th edition, pp. 132-142. I would encourage you to also review the page dedicated to the Parthenon I have constructed for my ARTH 200 class.
Monday, October 6: Review class for first exam. Come prepared to class to ask question and participate in discussion. If there is little participation, I will not conduct a review class for the second exam.

Wednesday, November 12: Quiz 4: on the terms related to the parts of the arch and vaults and the parts of the Christian Basilica found at the end of the slide list dedicated to Late Antique and Early Christian Art and Architecture .
Friday, November 14: We will begin class wrapping our discussion of the mosaic of San Vitale. Try to respond to the question for review comparing the Justinian mosaic from San Vitale to the Imperial Procession from the Ara Pacis. We will the consider a radically different cultural tradition in considering Insular / Hiberno-Saxon Art . Read Gardner 13th ed. pp. 407-415; 12th ed. pp. 421-429.
Friday, November 21: Quiz 5: will cover material on Slide list 16. Note there will be an additional Quiz that will cover material on Slide Lists 17 and 18. The date for this quiz will be announced after vacation. The final Cumulative Quiz Grade will still be based on the best 4 quizzes, but instead of the best 4 of 5 , it will be based on the best 4 of 6.

Wednesday, December 10: The west portal of the Church of St. Lazare at Autun presents a Romanesque image of the Last Judgment, while the tympanum of the central door of the South Transept portals of Chartres Cathedral presents a Gothic rendition of the same subject matter. Compare these two images. Especially pay attention to the conception of Christ and our relationship to Christ in the two images:
As a way of gaining perspective on the development of Medieval art consider the following comparison. Note the points of continuity, but also consider the differences:

Optional Short Paper (between 3-5 typewritten pages): The paper can be focused on any of the questions for review that we have had since the beginning of the semester. This also includes questions for review on Slide Lists we haven't gotten to yet.
You are not required to do this short paper. Your final grade will be based on the best three of four grades: 2 exams, short paper, and cumulative quiz grade. This will ensure that you will not risk lowering your grade by doing the short paper. If you decide to take this option, the short paper is due on the last day of classes, Friday, December 12 at the latest.
