Chapter 18.3: Regulation of Gene Expression

You can go back to the Fall, Spring or Summer schedules, to information on the lab , to the extra credit puzzles , or leave me a message . Or skip to the models section.

How do we know that gene expression is regulated? List some ways.

History:

in 1961 F. Jacob and J. Monod proposed the ____________ model of _____________ operon regulation.
  1. What is an operon?
  2. What does it allow the cell to do?
  3. Do eukaryotes have them?
  4. What is the function of the inducer, repressor, operator, promoter and structural genes for the lactose operon?
  5. What is the inducer in this case?
  6. What are the functions of the Z, Y and Ac genes?
  7. Draw a diagram of this operon and correctly label the parts with the terms above.
The promoter sequence overlaps the operator sequence in the lac operon. Why is this essential to their functions?
What other regulatory system controls the lac operon?
  1. What is the catabolite that controls this system?
  2. What is the catabolite activator protein (CAP)?
  3. How does it control ß galactosidase (lactase) production?
What is the difference between positive and negative systems of gene regulation?
Fill in the following matrix of possible regulatory systems:
