Research

For the previous decade (plus), I have focused my research activity on the recovery of New Orleans and the impacts from Hurricane Katrina, especially on the Lower 9th Ward.

Service

Community service is something I hold at great value. I am most involved in disaster relief, helping communities recover from hazard events. I also involve my students in this work.

News

Recently I applied for a grant to take students to New Orleans for the purpose of Disaster Recovery. This grant is focused on "Domestic Intercultural Immersion" and high-impact teaching practices. I was awarded this grant twice for a total of 4 funded trips 2015-2018. Students participate in a service-learning course meant to help the region with pressing isssues related to disaster geographies. Students have helped largely with wetlands restoration projects to better prepare the region for the next hurricane. In conjunction with these service activities, students are immersed in the culture and experience traditions, language, and other parts of the culture that is significantly different than their own. These educational experiences broadens their cultural compentencies and promote diversity goals at our home campus. Students learn a great deal while on these experiential learning trips - they have produced short videos to help express what they have learned. Please check out the videos from each student cohort: 2015 group, 2016 group, 2017 group: video #1 and video #2. And, I slide show that I put together.
